Alfred Hummel

Doncaster Templestowe Historical Society holds a number of items relating to Alfred Hummel, the Tower Hotel and the Tower in its collection.

Doncaster Tower and the Tower Hotel. The Wenke's hotel was built in 1895 to replace the original hotel building that was destroyed by fire. A car is parked in front of the hotel. The 285 feet high tower was built in 1879 and demolished in 1914. DTHS dp0170

As well as photographs there is a scale model of the tower, the flagpole rescued from the top of the tower when it was demolished and a replica of the tram that used to run passengers from the Box Hill railway station for day trips to visit the tower and hotel.

1890s poster advertising outings to the Doncaster Tower by means of the train from Princes Bridge Station to Box Hill, and thence by tram to Doncaster. The poster is illustrated by pictures of the tower and the closed box tramcar. The poster was printed for H. J. Hilton, the operator of the tram. DTHS dp0175
