Schramm Cottage - Living Room

Introductory audio played when entering the room (as at Mar2018)

Welcome to the living room

The living room of Schramm's cottage has been furnished to give visitors insight into the way Schramm's family lived in the 1800s.

When the cottage was builts, Kate Schramm moved from crowded quarters into what must have seemed a luxurious home.  The living room reflected Kate's love of fine furniture, and the austerity of Max Schramm's German origin.

It was a place for special occasions or Sunday evenings, when pastor Schramm held family prayers and the family sat engaged in conversations, reading or listening to music. Perhaps daughter Rachel or Rhoda played on the piano while the girls sang songs or hymns.

On the first Tuesday of each month, Kate Schramm, as wife of the pastor, held her "at home" afternoons when the ladies of the parish came to call. Her grandchildren told us about peeping through the door to see the teacups set out on a white lace cloth with silver tea service and dishes of neat sandwiches as iced cakes.

It was a room for genteel living.
