Doncaster Lutheran Petition re Opening of Cerberus on Sundays

1871 Petitions to Chief Secretary from residents of the colony requesting that a strict observance of the Sabbath be maintained.  VPRS 1192/P0000, 1871.  https://prov.vic.gov.au/archive/45E43997-F426-11E9-AE98-8F3DADC27451#  Part of Petitions (VPRS1192)

To the Honourable the Chief Secretary of the Colony of Victoria. The Petition of the undersigned Members of the Congregation of the Lutheran Church, worshipping at Waldau, Doncaster near Melbourne. Humbly showeth, That your Petitioners believe that God has, from the beginning, set apart one day in seven for rest from labour and for religious service. That they look with deep regret upon the opening of the Cerberus for inspection on the Lord’s Day as an unnecessary infringement of the Divine sacredness of that day, and a temptation deliberately offered to its profanation. That, in addition to this, your Petitioners protest against the sanctioning, or continuing to sanction by the Government, the opening of the Cerberus on the Sabbath, as a manifest injustice to the Working Classes of the Community, involving the oppression of some for the amusement of others, compelling some to sacrifice their right to rest and worship that others may enjoy their pleasure. Experience has abundantly shown that Sabbath amusement always issues in Sabbath toil. Your Petitioners, therefore, earnestly pray that the evil complained of may forthwith cease, and that no further steps in a similar direction be taken. And your Petitioners will ever pray. The 'Cerberus' mentioned must be the HMVS Cerberus which was built in England for the then Victorian Navy, launched in 1869.

On 9 April 1871, she reached Melbourne and was designated flagship of the Victorian Navy.

At the time of her arrival, public opinion of the ship was low, and she quickly attracted the nickname of 'Floating Gasometer'.

Apparently, it attracted a lot of visitors, and Doncaster parish was moved to petition the government against the opening of the vessel on Sundays.

It was scuttled in 1926 off Black Rock to serve as a breakwater.
