The beginning:

December 13th, 1949 heralded the beginning of the Doncaster Bowling Club with the election of the first Committee. Schramms Reserve was the Committee's preferred location for the physical development of a bowling green and club house.
Schramms Reserve was not landscaped, just bush vegetation and J.J. Tully Drive was a bush track from Doncaster Road to the proposed area for the bowling club. During the next two years a bowling green was constructed, mainly by the labour of the Foundation Members.
The first building cost 165 pounds. Once the club had been formed, voluntary work on clearing the site and laying the 11 rink green went on continuously. The second building cost 6,000 pounds in 1952/53 whilst the third addition including a billiard room cost 4,000 pounds. Saturday March 1st, 1952 witnessed the first game of bowls played at the club. It was a men only bowling day. The ladies were present in their finest frocks and big hats. Afternoon tea was served in a marquee. History records how the Shire of Doncaster/Templestowe now the City of Manningham has progressed during the past fifty years. But, just as importantly is how the Club has developed to have two first class greens, wonderful surrounds, and a club house with excellent facilities. President Williamson's words stated at a Doncaster Ladies Club meeting on July 4th, 1955, clearly established the criteria for the continuous growth of the club in its 50 year history. "Getting together is the beginning.  Keeping together is progress.  Working together is success"

Flag flying proudly - 2017

Doncaster Bowling Club New Flag Manningham Leader 2017-10-16

DONCASTER Bowling Club will go into the 2017-18 pennant season proudly flying a brand New Australian national flag. The new flag presented by Federal Menzies liberal MP Kevin Andrews, replaces the national flag which has served the club well for about five years. The flag being retired has been flown on the club flagpole an estimated 1000 times in all weathers. Mr Andrews presented the new flag at the club after its last pennant practice match the day before the AFL Grand Final, and a week before the start of the pennant season. He handed the flag to club executive chairman, Neil English, and bowls section president, Dinesh Balgovind. He said that Doncaster Bowling Club had been an important part of the Doncaster area since it was founded in 1949, and had grown with the suburb

Doncaster Bowling Club wins two Metropolitan Pennant premierships

Doncaster celebrates its premiership success

THE final week of the Bowls Victoria pennant season was one to remember for the Doncaster Bowling Club. Last Tuesday, Doncaster won theMetropolitan Pennant Midweek Open Division 3 championship for the first time. During the finals, Doncaster defeated teams from Croydon, Donvale, City of Melbourne, Beaumaris and Chirnside Park. In the grand final, at Bennettswood Bowling Club, Doncaster defeated Chirnside Park 68-56, to win the title. The winning side was Lorraine Hampton, Dianne Phelan, John Phillips, Margaret Berry, Peter Goodman, Gerda Van Der Peet, Kevin Phelan, Nicole Carriero, Mick Christodoulou, SandyMcDonald, Pam Forster, Lyn Goodman, Sharyn Arnold (emergency), and Fran Broadfoot (manager). Then, on the Saturday, Doncaster won the Division 9 women’s only championship by defeating Waverley Golf 37-32 at Burden Park – its second successive championship in this grade. This season’s winning side was Rosamond Hester, Jill Ford, Kay Golding, Lorraine Bradshaw, Sandra Dyer, Toni Agius, Penny Crowe, PamMcLean, Pat Calabresi (emergency) and Molly Harding (manager). Doncaster bowls committee vice-president, and a member of the winning midweek side, Sandy McDonald, was delighted with her side’s success. “Winning a major divisional flag for the first time is a significant achievement, and every member of the team can be very proud of their efforts,” McDonald said. “And, congratulations to our women’s Saturday Division 9 players, who have once again had a great season. It just goes to show that Doncaster, which has excellent greens and is well known for its program of social events, is also an achiever in pennant competition.” McDonald also noted Doncaster had hosted divisional semi-finals and finals, including the Division 1 final between Yarraville-Footscray and Essendon, with many players praising the quality of the club’s greens.

Lawn Bowls: 1 and 4 are lucky numbers

Dream comes true for Doncaster Bowling Club with two sectional pennant flags in one weekend

The dream has become reality for Doncaster Bowling Club with a stunning Saturday pennant finals result.
Last weekend, the club’s No 1 and No 4 sides charged into the winner’s circle with a vengeance.
Both sides emerged from the weekend with a sectional pennant flag – a combined result that sparked enthusiastic club celebrations.
The No 1 side, which had been striving for the past four years to win a final and return to second division, realised that dream last Saturday by achieving promotion from third division.
Doncaster No.1 which finished third after the home-and-away season, broke through by defeating second placed Richmond Union No 2 by 10 shots at Richmond.
The win booked a sectional pennant flag final against home-and-away ladder leaders and hot favourite Epping RSL, last Sunday at the historic Alphington Bowling Club.
Doncaster came away with a 12-shot win and the sectional pennant flag – the first time its No 1 side had won it since the 1990s
The No 4 side which overcame an almost insurmountable statistical task to creep into the top four, swamped top side Alphington (away) by 23 shots last Saturday to reach the sectional final against Whittlesea at Rosanna the next day.
Doncaster No 4 completed the club’s golden weekend by trouncing Whittlesea by 39 shots to seal the sectional pennant win.
Doncaster’s No 6 side also made the finals, but lost to Glen Waverley.
Doncaster bowls section president Brian Morris said the Saturday results, combined with three sides from the club’s midweek pennant section making the finals, was a credit to players and all supporters.
“The club, which has seen much success in its history, has been reinvigorated and once again is looking to a bright future”, he said.

Doncaster’s exciting Saturday pennant finals campaign has delivered some of the club’s best performances in years

Doncaster Bowling Club 2017-03-27 Manningham Leader

Doncaster Bowling Club’s finals campaign has been a rollercoaster from the opening weeks of the postseason. Just two shots separated Doncaster’s No.1 side from a grand final playoff after its semifinal last weekend. In the best performance by the side since the 1990s, Doncaster reached the Saturday pennant Division 3 semifinal but lost to Oakleigh South, 7068, on the very last end. The narrow defeat meant Doncaster’s hopes would be carried by the club’s No.4 side in Division 6. The fourths won their quarterfinal by 12 shots against Vermont South at Ringwood last Saturday then, the next day, stormed into the grand final by swamping Keilor by 30 shots in the semifinal at Ivanhoe. Doncaster went on to win the overall title with a 7359 win over Rosanna. The summer of 201617 has been a resounding success for Doncaster’s No 1 side, which reached the last four in an 80side competition, has returned to second division after four years trying and has won a sectional pennant flag. The performance by the No 4 side delighted the club, achieving promotion to Division 5 and winning the pennant. Doncaster bowls section president Brian Morris said the finals performance proved the club was, once again, a force to be reckoned with. “We are well known for having some of the best greens in Melbourne, we have a great social calendar, and our bowlers are getting the results,” he said. “It’s the perfect trifecta.

There’s a buzz around Doncaster after Division 6 pennant win

Doncaster Bowling Club’s fourth side capped a spectacular pennant season by clinching the Division 6 premiership. The fourths overcame a determined Rosanna in the grand final at Lalor last weekend by 14 shots in a game that could have gone either way at the afternoon tea break. Doncaster, however, pulled ahead in the second half to win the pennant 7359. It has been the most satisfying Saturday pennant season for the club since the 1990s. Doncaster’s firsts won promotion to Division 2, a sectional pennant flag and played its way into the Melbourne metropolitan Division 3 semifinals, falling just two shots short of reaching the grand final. Then fourths, which had scraped into the finals on percentage, continued their golden finals form by shrugging off Rosanna’s challenge to become the proud possessors of premiership medals. Back at Doncaster a team of volunteer members was helping the club host Division 1 and Division 2 grand finals with some 200 spectators attending. Doncaster chairman Garry Beckett, who was a skip in the fourths pennantwinning side, said winning the flag was a great achievement. But he was particularly satisfied the club once again had a winning feeling. “We’ve got winning teams, excellent greens, we’re hosting finals, there’s a buzz about the club, we’ve got good social activities and we’re looking forward to building on these successes,” he said.
