One of the earliest industries of Doncaster was the felling and carting of wood. As there was a huge demand for wood for cooking, heating and industry in Melbourne, the forests around Doncaster provided some of this wood. Stringy bark, wattles, red and grey box, white gums and sheoaks were among the timbers in demand. As many as 80 loads of wood a day left the district drawn by one, two and three horse teams. Most of this wood was sold at the Fitzroy wood market, bringing 4d to 1/1 per hundredweight.
