George Sanderson

George Sanderson, arrived in Melbourne on the Anne Milne in 1850. 

Family sources suggest that George secured a division of freehold of house and land at Connor's Creek, Boroondara, Templestowe, Victoria. 

George Sanderson seems to have been the owner of 5 ½ acres of land fronting Parkhill Road in Kew situated on the south side of Parkhill Road, directly opposite Boroondara Cemetery, and was part of Crown Portion no. 85 in the Parish of Boroondara. 

The purchase was registered in the office of the Registrar General, Memorial Book V no. 549 and the date of the conveyance was 21st March 1853. The purchase price was 104 pounds 10 shillings and was bought from one Daniel Bradshaw. 

It is interesting to find that Parkhill Road did not exist at that time and that access to the 5 ½ acres was via a private laneway 14 feet wide leading from Cotham Road. A Deed of Grant of Right of Way dated 21st May, 1853 was also registered, Memorial Book V no. 548. The Grantor of the Right of Way was one Lewis Hatherly to whom George Sanderson paid the sum of 10 shillings.

The above documents can be seen at Public Records Office Victoria in North Melbourne. 

No infrmation about "Connor's Creek" has been found. There was a water course known as Connell's Creek in Hawthorn. The Kew Cemetery is on high ground but the land does fall away as you proceed eastward towards the Victoria Gardens.

Templestowe is in the Parish of Bulleen and there is no connection at all with the Parish of Boroondara.

Referencing the land being part of Crown Portion no. 85 in the Parish of Boroondara, I have found a PROV plan showing the particular land. 

Have had to extract a section showing the land from the overall larger plan as it is of a very large file size. The particular land is in the centre of the plan under the easily identifiable cemetery.
