We thank authors who so often work tirelessly for sometimes decades creating works that adds to our knowledge and understanding of the past stories and histories.
We receive donations of many such books.
We pledge to keep these documents for as long as the Doncaster Templestowe Historical Society (DTHS) exists. Having the book in our library helps to make it accessible - as long as researchers know that it exists - and as long as borrowers remember to return it.
A much more powerful strategy is to give DTHS permission to make it available on our website so that it's contents can be searched from anywhere in the world ! This costs nothing !
Getting your book online is most easily achieved by giving us the final print file (usually in Portable Document Format (PDF) after publication of the hard copy.
Unfortunately, many authors mislay this final file so that the process of "digitisation" is more time consuming: we need to remove the spine to allow each page to be "fed" into a scanner; the scan is Optical Character Recognised (OCR) to turn it into text; images are separately retrieved; the output is proof read against the original scan; it is formatted for the screen.
Many authors (or their descendants) are scared of the permission form which asks for legal permission to publish under Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (see full text) . In summary this internationally recognised permission allows us to:
- Share - copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format
- Adapt - remix, transform, and build upon the material
- Attribute — give appropriate credit, providing a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests you endorse.
- NonCommercial - use the material for only NonCommercial commercial purposes.
- ShareAlike - distribute only under the same license as the original.
- No additional restrictions - not apply any legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits
