Fruit-growing in Doncaster and Templestowe - Newspaper Pictorials

The Doncaster and Templestowe area was once one of the major fruit-growing areas in Victoria.

Melburnians generally viewed the fruit-growing industry in Doncaster with great pride and appreciation, treating the district as both the city's primary fruit bowl and a highly popular scenic destination to see the blossoms at spring time. Newspapers frequently published full-page pictorials of the fruit-growing activities in the area.

Here are a few of these pictorials primarily from the 1920s and 1930s when fruit-growing in Doncaster and Templestowe was at its peak.

The pictorials have been taken from newspapers in the National Library of Australia (NLA) on-line newspaper resource TROVE. Newspaper details and the picture captions have been put against each pictorial.

Picking at Tully Orchard Doncaster

Wealth for the skillful grower and health for the eager consumer —such are peaches, and, throughout Victoria, trees bowed down with the luscious fruit arc yielding their bounty to the gatherers. Picking is in full swing at the orchard of Mr. J. J. Tully, Doncaster.

These pictures were taken there yesterday -

  • Left - The secret out! This is why little Margaret Tully's cheeks are rouged with good health. She knows when to be on the spot when the biggest ones are being carted.
  • Right - A task they like. Daisy and Laurence Tully busy in the fragrant orchard. A task to be envied by city kiddies who have never seen long aisles of peach trees in full bloom.

Spring Comes to Orchards Round Melbourne.

Gorgeous blossom heralds the triumphant entry of spring in the orchards scattered around the outskirts of Melbourne. Abundant rain has made this season's display more than usually attractive, and hundreds of week-end car trippers have feasted their eyes on accents of floral magnificence within a short distance of the city. This splendid springtime study was photographed yesterday at Mr. F. Thiele's orchard at Doncaster. Miss Jean Roach, with baby Isobel Lawford and old Dobbie, are shown in a setting fit for fairies.
