Through Shadowed Vale - Cr. Muriel Green 1923-1997
With the death of Muriel Green on 4th March, 1977, the Doncaster and Templestowe Historical Society has lost one of its most ardent workers.Muriel was a foundation member of our Society and at the time of her death held office as President, having served that office with distinction for six successive years (1971-77). During this time she was absent from one meeting only. Muriel‘s first office was as Secretary for two years (1967-68) and she was closely associated with the exhibition at Schramm‘s Cottage on its original site, organised in conjunction with the proclamation of the Shire as a City in 1967. It was as a result of this exhibition that our Society was established.

Muriel and her family came from Bentleigh to live in Donvale in 1959, and was soon involved in community affairs, being a member of the St. John's Cottage Auxiliary, Secretary of the East Doncaster State School Mothers‘ Club, and later, Council Home Help Supervisor.
When the Schramm's Cottage Project Committee was formed in 1971, Muriel was appointed Secretary, and was a driving force behind the re-erection and furnishing of Schramm‘s Cottage in its present location. In a most fitting manner, this will be a living memorial to her untiring and dedicated service to the advancement of local history in this municipality.
Muriel also served the community she loved in a wider sphere. In 1973, she was elected Councillor of the City of Doncaster and Templestowe, and as such was a member of the East Doncaster and Mitcham High Schools Advisory Councils. She was also closely associated with the Doncaster and Templestowe Debating Society, Musical Society, Choral Society, Philharmonic Society, Municipal Band, Art Promotion Group and was an active member of the Bulleen Women‘s Club, Templestowe Toastmistresses‘ Club and Yarra Valley Soroptimist Club.
With her passing we hae lost not only a zealous worker but a loyal friend. Muriel will long be remembered with gratitude for her selfless devotion, her words of encouragement and endearment, and her indomitable spirit of determination to fulfil her goals in life. We extend our deep and heartfelt sympathy to Irvine and family in their time of great sorrow.
"Well done, thou good and faithful servant."
