Schramm Cottage - Max Schramm's Study

Introductory audio played when entering the room (as at Mar2018)

Welcome to the Study

It was Pastor Schramm's domain. His wife Kate would never consider entering the room without first knocking and receiving permission to enter. The children did not often see the inside of the study and when they did it was often to be reprimanded.

The room had been the girls bedroom when the house was built in 1875. The boys slept in the small room next to the kitchen. In the 1890s the three girls married leaving the room empty. Then Max Schramm made the room is study. Here he wrote his long German sermons, arranged weddings with members of his congregation, and being a classical scholar, sat up late at night reading Greek and Latin texts. He later had a bed moved in so that he would not disturb Kate after sitting up late studying.

Many of the objects in the study were an integral part of Max Schramm's life.

The telescope goes back to the days when he was the ships officer. On the desk is a small job with decoration and a pewter lid. Schramm used this vessel to give communion when visiting the sick.

There is a metal ink stand for black and red ink and a blotter to dry the ink after writing.

This room was the quiet retreat of a scholar.
