Introductory audio played when entering the room (as at Mar2018)

Welcome to the dining room.

Tradition and formalities were important elements in the lives of the German family and meals were serious ritual. Because the kitchen was so small and the family a large one, meals were partaken in the dining room. Max Schramm presided over the table, and always said Grace before any meal commenced. At the end of the evening meal, passages were read from the Bible.
In the centre of the table is a revolving cruet set for condiments. Meat was carved in the kitchen and brought to the table in a large meat platter. Vegetables was served from covered dishes at the table. It is said that meals were carried from the kitchen along the veranda I'm down the main passage from the front door to the dining room. Keeping food hot must have been a problem indeed. Above the fireplace is a portrait of Max Schramm. And on the side board at the opposite end of the room is a silver cup donated by the Leader newspapers to WF Williams in 1883 for the best fruit carton in the district. Next too this is a silver teapot donated to Kate Schramm by the scholars of the Doncaster common school established by her husband Max. The school operated from 1860 two 1884
