Lauer Family

The Lauer Family

In April 1893 the eighth child of August and Ida Lauer was born, they named her Hilda.  This year Mrs. Hilda Lloyd, a member of the Doncaster Templestowe Historical Society, celebrated her 100th birthday.  Hilda Lloyd now lives in a nursing home in Surrey Hills but this lovely lady has an active mind and her speech is clear.

Near the bottom left-hand side is Richard Clay's house and a real estate agents office from the land boom time. Edward Gallus' house in Tram Road. Aumann Reunion 1993

Who would have thought there would be so many Aumanns in Australia?  It seemed that most of them were in Doncaster on Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st of October.  Nearly five hundred registered for the weekend and four busloads attended a tour of the district on Saturday afternoon, viewing the former homes and orchards of members of the Aumann family.

Over 200 family members arrived at Schramm's Cottage at 2pm for the dedication of the new headstone re-erected to honour Carl "Father" Aumann.  The gardens were at their best in the spring sunshine, as the family gathered around the new marble headstone in front of Atkins house.

Pastor Lloyd Boughen assisted by Pastor Peter Aumann conducted a simple but moving ceremony to honour the founder of the family in the district, and the cemetery where he was laid to rest. Pastor Lloyd said that he had never heard of such a ceremony being performed and there was no set form or service for such an occasion.

He arranged the ceremony into three parts. First an acknowledgement of the fact that this is a cemetery, by reading the committal service and a prayer of thanks to God.  Second, about ourselves, Pastor read "The Good Shepherd" Psalm in English then Mr. Bill Drews read the same Psalm in German from an old German text; and the third part related to the stone by reading chapter 21 Genesis, the story of Jacob who, in a dream, saw a stone as a ladder to Heaven, Jacob then placed the stone upright as a mark of God's presence.  Pastor Broughen said; "This stone is marking the place where the body of the father of the Aumann family rests as a mark of God's prayer for his people."

The visitors spent the rest of the afternoon looking about the grounds and cottages, many relaxing on the lawns enjoying the delightful spring weather.  At the Lutheran hall, a wonderful display of artefacts was on show.  Among these were orchard items, clothing, family trees and personal possessions gleaned from the extended Aumann family.  These were set out for people to browse through and reminisce.

On Saturday evening, a dinner for 300 was held in a marquee set up behind the church and the Aumann family history book was launched.  Sunday morning was devoted to a church service, and the final activity was a barbeque luncheon held in the marquee.

Over 300 people, some from as far away as Queensland and Western Australia attended the lunch and renewed old friendships and caught up with relatives from distant places.

The Historical Society was pleased to be included in these celebrations. Tracing the history of the pioneer families of the district is an important part of our work. We are always keen to add to our knowledge and our archives as new facts often emerge when enthusiasts gather.  This reunion may encourage other old families to research their histories and hold similar gatherings in the future.

100 Acres Wood

The 100 Acres Flora And Fauna Reserve, Park Orchards VIC 3114
Historic Walks Through Doncaster - Templestowe Parks
The 100 Acres

The park is a block of natural bushland set aside for the appreciation of the natural habitat. The 100 acres contains flora and fauna that was native to the area before the intrusion of settlers.
At the turn of the century, Tom Petty, Doncaster's most enterprising orchardist, purchased a large area at Park Orchards and cleared the land for orchards.  One of the men who worked for Tom Petty was his nephew, Jim Mitchell.  Mitchell bought a hundred acre block north of Tom's land and built a house.  He planted two small orchards and also grew berries. To supply water for his crops and his horses Jim dug several dams.
The area had been part of a large grazing run of eight square miles and the original bushland has remained on most of the park land.  In the 1970's, the block was to be subdivided for housing but the community of Park Orchards and the Rate Payers Association persuaded the council to purchase the land so that a section of natural bush could be preserved.
The Park has been retained in its natural form.  A cleared path for horse riding runs around the perimeter and across the centre are walking tracks and mime trails winding through the trees.  At the main entrances, a plan shows the paths and areas of interest.  Names, in keeping with the land, identify the tracks and places.  There is the Wild Cherry track, the Swamp Gum, the Wattle, Dog Wood, and Candle Bark trail and the Tadpole Dam, Green Dam and Brown Dam.

Milk Delivery and Horses

"As a very little girl, it was always my ambition to wake early enough to see the draught horses and the milkman who delivered full-cream milk in glass bottles each morning at dawn. I was never fast enough though. From my snug position in my parents’bed I would hear the clip-clop of the horses’hooves quite clearly, but by the time I scrambled to their window, which looked onto the street, the horses were always gone. I remember that the horses lived in a paddock of the dairy on a corner opposite Doncaster Shoppingtown, and it was exciting to pass by and see them there - they were so big."

Transcription/ Dictation/ Voice Typing with Google Docs

Doncaster Templestowe needs volunteers to help us transcribe all sorts of text so that it is searchable by the world community who may be interested in something that happened in Doncaster or Templestowe.

If you can help, please contact us......

One of the most numerous tasks for us is transcription of text documents into searchable typed text.
There are many ways of doing this:
  • typing into a wordprocessor like Microsoft Word, Apple Pages, Google Docs etc
  • speaking or "voice typing" into a word processor like Microsoft Word, Apple Pages, Google Docs etc.
  • scanning printed text and processing it with an Optical Character Recognition Program
We use all these techniques on different resources.

This page details how to use Google Docs to transcribe a hand written text.
Google docs is useful because it is so accurate, and completely free to use.
All you need to start with is a
Voice typing with Google Docs is probably the most accurate voice to text system on earth.

After creating a google account, open a new google document,

Open the file that contains the source image(s) that need transcription.
Arrange the windows either side by side, or top bottom so you can see both at the same time.

In the GoogleDoc window, type the detailed code or description that identifies the document being transcribed so we will understand what you have done.

In the GoogleDoc window, click on "Tools" and select "Voice Typing"

A microphone icon appears on the screen with advice to "Click to speak"

Click the microphone to start recording.

Speak slowly and clearly and whatever you say is typed for you on screen......

Stop and start every few lines to ensure the program is keeping up.
Most people find that it is more efficient if they leave the errors alone until they have transcribed about  a half page.  Then go back and correct all errors.

When you have finished a job, copy and paste the text into an email and send to us.
