- They include as many items as I could find by searching on the names of the suburbs Doncaster (and therefore Doncaster East), Templestowe, Donvale and Bulleen.
- In addition to Family Notices listings (births, engagements, marriages, deaths, funerals, in memoriam notices) I have added items from news and social pages of the newspapers (reports of engagements, weddings, wedding anniversaries, divorces, sudden deaths, inquests, wills & estates).
- Some tips for searching:
- The transcriptions on Trove are meant to be an exact rendition of the newspaper item. Names may have been misspelled in the newspaper or by the transcriber. Try a few alternatives before you give up.
- Note that names beginning with Mc were often shown in the early newspapers beginning with M’ - hence M’Kay, rather than McKay.
- If a marriage or death does not appear in the decade in which you know it should be try later decades.
- Sometimes a later In Memoriam notices appears when there was no original death notice.
- Sometimes a later Wedding Anniversary notice appears when the original wedding was not announced in the press.
- Any notes that I have added to the text are shown thus: [There is a line missing at this point as the paper was creased before it was scanned.]
- [sic] - indicates that the misspelling is what appeared in the original newspaper.
- Where the scan of the newspaper is unclear it will be indicated thus: [?], [??], [189?] or [home?] – the latter being the best guess at what the word may have been.
- If the name of the suburb did not appear in the original newspaper announcement then I am unlikely to have found it.
- Trove is an excellent resource for your family history search. New material is being added there from time to time. I highly recommend that you continue your own search there.

1939 - Accidentally Shot
Ray Hughes, aged 13 years, of Foot street, Templestowe, is in the Children's Hospital as a result of a shooting accident yesterday afternoon.
The police who investigated the accident, learned that Hughes and two companions went on a shooting excursion, one of the boys having an air-rifle, and the other a small-bore rifle.
Hughes was jumping over a fence when the rifle was accidentally discharged. He was treated by a district doctor before being taken to hospital.

Starting at the Victoria Street carpark at Ruffey Lake Park, points of interest for this heritage walk focus on the influence of German settlers who became orchard growers and created the Waldau Village legacy.

Notice: Installation as a Pastor (1876)
God willing, the teacher Max Schramm who on 26 July sat and passed his exam for the holy ministry, will be ordained by Pastor Herlitz, the Synod President, on the 21st Sunday after Trinity (5 November) and will be installed in the afternoon of the same day in his Doncaster-Waldau congregation. With regard to Point 4 of the report on the General Synod published in the 'Church and Mission' section of this edition, we are pleased to be able to report that Mr Schramm has declared himself willing to trial the training of student teachers.Issue No 10, October 1876, page 149:

Ordination in Melbourne (1876)
The solemn ordination of the former teacher Max Schramm took place in Melbourne on 5 November, the 21st Sunday after Trinity, with Pastors Frank and Leypoldt assisting. The latter preached in the main service on the scriptural passage, 'Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men ... ' etc. and finished by leading into the ensuing ceremony. Thereupon, Pastor Herlitz, the ordaining minister, stepped up to the altar, as the ordinand, flanked by the two assistants, one on his right and one on his left faced him. He explained to the assembled large congregation watching this rare ceremony with rapt attention, and to the ordinand the rights and obligations incumbent upon him. Hereupon, the ordinand solemnly pledged his commitment to the Holy Scriptures and the entire Lutheran Confessional Writings and thereafter was admitted to the office of the holy ministry by the laying on of hands. The installation of Pastor Schramm into his congregation at Doncaster took place in the afternoon of the same day. He himself preached on the Epistle of the Day, whereupon Pastor Herlitz put him in charge of the congregation. Also taking part in the rite of installation were Pastor Leypoldt, the two Melbourne Elders Feldmann and Kaiser and the committee members of the Doncaster congregation: Aumann sen., H. Finger, Joh. Pump and Gottfr. Thiele. Each one of them greeted Pastor Schramm with a fitting message of blessings, and the ceremony and the worship services of the day ended with the celebration of Holy Communion. May God's rich blessings abide with our dear brother and his work in the school and the congregation.Issue No. 11, November 1876, page 164

trust be frustrated. He then expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the congregation for putting on this celebration for him, and for this tangible proof of their appreciation and love which would serve to spur him on to renewed and greater faithfulness in his labours, and at the same time he asked God for Christ's sake to forgive him and the congregation -for we all sin in many ways -what had displeased Him during these 25 years. After Pastor Herlitz had congratulated Pastor Schramm in his own and his fellow clergymen's name, the lovely celebration which all those present will long remember with pleasure, concluded with prayer, the Lord's Prayer, the Benediction and the hymn 'Now thank we all our God'. ·
May the Lord continue to bless the venerable gentleman and graciously fulfil the wish of his congregation for him to keep on working among them for quite some time to come.

Obituary (1908)
As was his own wish and honoured by his family, his burial which was conducted by his successor, Pastor Held, took place quietly in the Box Hill Cemetery. Following the interment, the President representing the Synod, nevertheless gave a simple address in which he briefly mentioned the above facts, ending with these words: 'The Synod acknowledges: he did what he could and will honour his memory. Surely, he will have been received by the Lord with the gracious word, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord."
