Ordination in Melbourne (1876)

The solemn ordination of the former teacher Max Schramm took place in Melbourne on 5 November, the 21st Sunday after Trinity, with Pastors Frank and Leypoldt assisting. The latter preached in the main service on the scriptural passage, 'Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men ... ' etc. and finished by leading into the ensuing ceremony. Thereupon, Pastor Herlitz, the ordaining minister, stepped up to the altar, as the ordinand, flanked by the two assistants, one on his right and one on his left faced him. He explained to the assembled large congregation watching this rare ceremony with rapt attention, and to the ordinand the rights and obligations incumbent upon him. Hereupon, the ordinand solemnly pledged his commitment to the Holy Scriptures and the entire Lutheran Confessional Writings and thereafter was admitted to the office of the holy ministry by the laying on of hands. The installation of Pastor Schramm into his congregation at Doncaster took place in the afternoon of the same day. He himself preached on the Epistle of the Day, whereupon Pastor Herlitz put him in charge of the congregation. Also taking part in the rite of installation were Pastor Leypoldt, the two Melbourne Elders Feldmann and Kaiser and the committee members of the Doncaster congregation: Aumann sen., H. Finger, Joh. Pump and Gottfr. Thiele. Each one of them greeted Pastor Schramm with a fitting message of blessings, and the ceremony and the worship services of the day ended with the celebration of Holy Communion. May God's rich blessings abide with our dear brother and his work in the school and the congregation.

trust be frustrated. He then expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the congregation for putting on this celebration for him, and for this tangible proof of their appreciation and love which would serve to spur him on to renewed and greater faithfulness in his labours, and at the same time he asked God for Christ's sake to forgive him and the congregation -for we all sin in many ways -what had displeased Him during these 25 years.
After Pastor Herlitz had congratulated Pastor Schramm in his own and his fellow clergymen's name, the lovely celebration which all those present will long remember with pleasure, concluded with prayer, the Lord's Prayer, the Benediction and the hymn 'Now thank we all our God'. ·
May the Lord continue to bless the venerable gentleman and graciously fulfil the wish of his congregation for him to keep on working among them for quite some time to come.

Obituary (1908)

the presence of the Melbourne committee members to their full satisfaction; he was ordained by the Synod President during a morning service in Melbourne and was installed in the afternoon of the same day as pastor in Doncaster. At the same time, the Doncaster congregation was joined with two other branch congregations hitherto of the Melbourne parish, namely Scoresby and Harkaway, to form a parish. For 30 years (some years ago he was able to celebrate the silver anniversary of his ministry) he carried out his pastoral duties, and in later years also, those of the Synod's City and Immigrant Missionary, in faithfulness until his advancing years forced him to relinquish both duties. Since then, his physical and mental strength kept waning more and more until a peaceful death ended his earthly life.
As was his own wish and honoured by his family, his burial which was conducted by his successor, Pastor Held, took place quietly in the Box Hill Cemetery. Following the interment, the President representing the Synod, nevertheless gave a simple address in which he briefly mentioned the above facts, ending with these words: 'The Synod acknowledges: he did what he could and will honour his memory. Surely, he will have been received by the Lord with the gracious word, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord."
