East Doncaster Secondary College

East Doncaster Secondary College was established in 1974 and is situated in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. In 2020, the College has an enrolment of 1618 students, including 98 international students. We have 137 equivalent full time staff – 167 staff members: 4 Principal class, 122 Teachers and 41 Education support staff.

We are proudly multicultural across over 40 nationalities, with a very successful international student program. 41% of our students undertaking English as an Additional Language (EAL) study. With over 70% of our students having language backgrounds other than English, a strong focus has been on literacy improvement..

Our College has a strong tradition of academic excellence and we aim to promote and sustain a reflective learning culture. We want students to experience a sense of achievement and growth in their academic, social and emotional development. We are striving to embed the concept of reflective practice and teaching the “whole child” into all elements of school life.

Our student achievement data is excellent across a range of data sets and year levels. Our VCE results have been consistently excellent and our NAPLAN data indicates our students are strong performers in both Literacy and Numeracy.

In the Senior School, a school based apprenticeship VCAL program is provided as a pathway option, whilst we provide access to a wide range of VET studies to maximise the opportunities of success for all students. Through a highly successful VCE program, more than 90% of our students progress to university.

In 2019 we were appointed as a ‘host-school’ to coordinate the Eastern Metropolitan Headstart cluster that will further expand VCAL and VCE options for our students via apprenticeships and traineeships.

From a teaching and learning perspective, we continue to focus on sustaining a common instructional model, the adoption of high impact teaching strategies and pedagogical practices, and the use of high quality feedback mechanisms. This occurs with an emphasis on collaboration in teaching teams to ensure that there is a focus on learning improvement for every student.

Our catch phrase as learners is “Creating a Culture of Curiosity”

Our College values guide our behaviours and teacher response to behavioural concerns. We are striving to have our students taking greater responsibility in the classroom and becoming involved in how curriculum is addressed. We are consistently seeking to build leadership capacity in students via training and mentoring and this has resulted in a greater involvement in the Student Representative Council, the Senior and Middle School leadership teams, Captaincy of Home Groups, Houses, International Students, Sporting Teams, Debating, Music, Drama, Peer Support and Technical Support.

in responding to our students needs, we have developed a Positive Education agenda – “Positive Futures”, in order to improve the quality of life of our students and all stakeholders in our educational community. We continue to be proud that our College embraces both social and cultural diversity and inclusion by being accepted as ‘lead school’ in the state-wide ‘Respectful Relationships’ program.

Our extensive co-curricular programs have also offered multiple tiers of support and connection to our students. Sport, debating, academic competitions, music, performing and creative arts events cater for the diversity of student interest and provide a vast array of learning opportunities. Our College camps and outdoor education programs offer a range of experiences to East Doncaster students at all year levels.

The internationalising education agenda continues to be a prominent school focus. We aim to provide our students with opportunities to develop global knowledge and cross cultural understanding through our sister school relationships with Suzhou Caoqiao Middle School in Suzhou,China and Istituto Istruzione Superiore Biagio Pascal in Novara, Italy. These include teacher and student exchange on a biennial basis. These are complemented with opportunities for students to participate in tours to NASA and World Challenge projects. We continue to provide opportunities for our students to develop an understanding of and connection with their community beyond the College gates.

DD11BF1D1 - Archives room - Newspaper cutting from a local paper reporting a Doncaster Council proposal to ask the Education Department to expedite the establishment of a high school in the Doncaster area. Discussion on the issue included the relative merits of a site in Doncaster and another at Deep Creek. Mention is also made to the Norwood High School that was, at that time, operating in temporary accommodation at the Boronia High School. Children from Warrandyte travelled by bus and train to reach the school, leaving at 7.30 am and returning home at 5.30 pm. Two other items in the same cutting refer 1. to Doncaster Council's negative response to a request for a blanket ban on further petrol stations in the area, and 2. to the appointment of Mr L B Garson as a full-time librarian at the Nunawading High School.
