Welcome to the School Room (Audio Transcription)

When Schramm’s cottage was built in 1874 this large room was used as a school room. Here Max conducted a small denominational school for Trinity Lutheran congregation until it closed in 1886 because of declining enrolments. The Department of education then rented the room for classes until such time that the larger state school was built nearby later that year. For many years Schramm also conducted adult education classes here on Saturday mornings.

The tower in the perspex case is a model of the Beaconsfield tower - a will known landmark in Doncaster from 1979 until 1914. It was built by Alfred Hummel to take advantage of the panoramic views around this countryside. The tower supported by steel cables was demolished in 1914 because of fears that it might no longer be safe.

The organ was used in the original Lutheran Church which stood on this site from 1858 until 1892.

On the wall is a photograph of the first electric tram in Australia which ran from Box Hill to Doncaster along Station Street from various properties to the corner where Doncaster Shoppingtown now stands. Electric power to the 15 hp motor was generated in an engine house midway between Box Hill and Doncaster. The tram commenced operating in 1889 and, although the service operated profitably in the first years, it ceased operation on 6 January 1896.

When the cottage was dismantled in 1972 to be rebuilt on this site, the school room had been partitioned into two sections - one of which was used as a kitchen.
