Probably in the 1950's, a row of pine trees was planted to act as a windbreak. Most probably leading to the name Pinewood Drive.
4 Pinewood Drive Templestowe was built beginning in 1973. It was the second house in the street. Apparently the area was an apple orchard. 10 original pine trees are still growing on this property.

Pinewood Drive as shown in Plan: Counties of Evelyn and Bourke 1948
Old maps and aerial photographs can be used to show the historic location of properties within the Doncaster-Templestowe area.

The plan is believed ( source??) to have originally been produced in the 1870’s-80’s by the Lands Department showing land owners at the time.
The plan over a number of years has since been in part updated by the Lands Department.

The property at the time does not appear to show it being used as an orchard as fruit trees as identifiable in other nearby areas cannot be seen on the site.

Pinewood Drive, Sunnyside Farm and the Smiths
Melways and the Pinewood Drive area was once owned by the James Smith family of Sunnyside Farm (house still standing at the corner of Clarke and Atkinson Streets).
James Smith in his old age (circa 1920) partitioned his farm between his two sons. One had the frontage to Atkinson Street as far as Anderson Street, and the other had all the frontage to Foote Street (Alexander Smith).
