Paul Reinhold Aumann was bom at the Waldau-Doncaster Inn, Victoria, on January 15th, 1879, seventh child and sixth son of Ernst August Aumann and Caroline Ernestine nee Hanke.

He was educated at Doncaster School and left school at age 14 on August 21st, 1891, being given a certificate stating that he had attained the standard of education required by The Education Act of 1872. He went to work on the family orchard in George Street, Doncaster.

He was confirmed at the Lutheran Church, Doncaster by Pastor Max Schramm on March 26th, 1893.

Paul, who was nicknamed Peter by his brothers, worked at George Street until he purchased 21 acres of land in Park Road, Donvale. On August 19th, 1914, Paul married Christina Anna Pump in a ceremony at the Lutheran Church, Doncaster. Christina was born on December 8th, 1882, a daughter of Johann Pump and Christina Eva nee Stecher. She was a sister to Catherine who married Paul’s brother Bill, and a cousin to John Pump who married Paul’s sister Caroline.

Christina, or Auntie Teenie as she was better known, was very small in stature. She raised a family of three boys while helping on the orchard. She had a real love for her garden, where she spent a lot of her time, even when advancing years meant that her mobility was restricted by the need for her to use two walking sticks.

Paul and Teenie were stalwarts of the Lutheran Church, Doncaster, the church they attended all their lives.

Paul was a keen fisherman, and looked forward to the fishing trip which was his annual holiday.

Paul died at Mitcham on October 20th, 1958 and is buried in the Templestowe Cemetery, Victoria. Auntie

Teenie continued to live at Park Road with her youngest son Alick, who ran the orchard and looked after his mother. Auntie Teenie died on July 22nd, 1971 and is also buried at Templestowe Cemetery.

On May 10th, 1943 he married Ruth Marianne Hanslow at Box Hill. Ruth was bom on March 9th, 1917 at Leeton, New South Wales, a daughter of James Edward Murray Hanslow and Clara Elsie nee Jackson. Ruth spent her first five years on a wheat property about 20 miles from Leeton, but in 1922 her family sold up and moved to Wandin, Victoria, and it was from there that she went to work. After their marriage, the Knees Road orchard became the family home for Robert and Ruth, and their two children were bom while they lived at North Ringwood. They regularly attended St Stephen’s Church of England, Warrandyte.

After 13 years at Knees Road, they moved to an apple orchard at Officer, where they spent 22 years. During this time they attended Berwick Church of England.

Caroline Ernestine nee Hanke

Robert Hermann Aumann was born at Doncaster, Victoria, on August 10th, 1881, the eighth child and seventh son of Ernst August Aumann and Caroline Ernestine nee Hanke.

Hermann, nick-named Larcher by his brothers, was educated at Doncaster East School, leaving at the age of 12 in 1893 to work on the family orchard.

He was confirmed a member of the Lutheran Church, Doncaster, by Pastor Max Schramm on April 7th, 1895. He went on to be a staunch member of the church, worshipping there regularly and taking an active part in church affairs.

He left the family orchard to purchase his own property in Belmore Road, Box Hill North. Here he established an orchard, and lived on the property until his death. He had a routine of going shopping to Box Hill, bringing his purchases home in a Gladstone bag. In his younger days, the shopping trip was accomplished by horse and jinker, but in later years he used the local bus and became very well known by all the bus travellers.

A kind and generous man, he would often be found helping his cousins, the Hankes, on their orchard in Elgar Road. He took great pride in his garden, growing many of the older varieties of flowers, especially columbines.

His niece Doris Bailey nee Aumann built a new home at Box Hill North on land previously owned by Hermann. She took care of him in his ageing years and Hermann would take her out to a Chinese restaurant as a token of appreciation.

Hermann never married and died at Surrey Hills on July 20th, 1966. He is buried in the Box Hill Cemetery, Victoria.

Aunt, as she was known by everyone, was an excellent housekeeper and a wonderful cook. Every Sunday, when all her nephews and nieces finished Sunday School, they would walk to Grandmother’s house and Aunt would set them around the large dining room table and give them morning tea. Sometimes fresh kuchen was served, and beautiful chicken soup was often on the menu. The same warm hospitality and tempting array of food was offered to all visitors.

Aunt never married, but although she had no children of her own she had the love and respect of many children of all ages.

Being raised in a strict Lutheran family, she was a devout Christian. She was confirmed as a member of the Doncaster Lutheran Church by Pastor Max Schramm on April 11th, 1897. Throughout her life she worshipped at this church and took an active role in church affairs.

KENNETH JOHN 1926-1969 GWENDOLINE ADELAIDE WANKE 1928-1985

Johann Otto Albert (Bertie) Aumann was born on June 10th, 1885, in the old Waldau-Doncaster Inn, which was situated on the corner of Victoria Street and Doncaster Road, where the Doncaster Hotel now stands. He was the tenth child and the eighth son of Ernst August Aumann and Caroline Ernestine nee Hanke. He was baptised into the Lutheran Church on July 12th, 1885, by Pastor Max Schramm, his sponsors being his uncles Carl Aumann and Wilhelm Hanke and his aunt Minna Dehnert.

Educated at East Doncaster Primary School, he had achieved the standard of education required (by the Education Act of 1890) by the age of 11, and left school to work on his parents’ property in George Street, Doncaster. He joined the Doncaster District Brass Band, in which he played tuba. Later he was a member of the Templestowe Cemetery Trust.

Bertie married Esther Lydia Blobel in the Lutheran Church, Doncaster on February 18th, 1924, with

Pastor John Simpfendorfer performing the service. Lydia had been born at Horsham on November 12th, 1891, a daughter of Gustav Hermann Blobel and Maria nee Hartwich. His older brothers August and Artie had already married Lydia’s sisters Agnes and Maria, and it was during Lydia’s holidays to their homes that Bertie began courting her. Bertie was 38 years old and Lydia 32 at the time of their marriage. Just prior to their marriage, Bertie’s nephews and nieces (Wal, Ern, Joyce and Doris) discovered a box of chocolates intended for Lydia carefully hidden amongst the empty cases which Bertie brought back from market one morning. They disposed of the chocolates and carefully wrapped stones in their place! Bertie failed to see the funny side of this episode, but did go on to reward Claris, the only innocent party to the conspiracy, with an Easter egg that year!

Bertie and Lydia made their home on an orchard property in Oliver’s Road, Templestowe, where their

only child, Kenneth John, was born in 1926. This property was originally a small part of a large land holding which extended from the present Reynold’s Road to beyond the present Warrandyte Road. This large holding was owned by Mr Rob Smith, who subdivided the land. Carl Aumann, August Aumann Snr., August Aumann Jnr. and Artie Aumann each purchased a block of land, and Bertie later bought his land from his father, August Snr. Smith moved to Epping after selling, but is still remembered as the namesake of Smith’s Road. Their house was built by a Mr Weckworth.

Bertie was a very good fruit grower, his lemons being of especially good quality. Peaches, pears and plums were also grown. While working on the orchard, Bertie and any hired hands would eat in a small room attached to the stables. This contained a table and chairs for a sit-down meal, and the old brass band instruments decorated one comer of the room. This room later became a tool shed. Bertie and Artie held adjoining properties and shared “tobacco tanks”. These were heavy, riveted square iron tanks about four feet across in which rope-like strips of tobacco were steeped, and the resultant liquor used as a spray for the fruit trees. In those days, hand-

operated spray pumps were available, but they tended to be mechanically unreliable. It seems that the Aumann boys were not competent mechanics, as spraying season tended to be swearing season!

Marketing was done with the fruit transported to the Royal Victoria market by horse and jinker. The horses were left at the Royal Saxon Hotel stables until it was time for the trip home again.

Like most of the Aumanns, Bertie annually slaughtered a pig, and cured his own bacon and ham. A type of liver sausage was also made according to an old German recipe. One year, Bertie climbed up to the rafters of his shed to where the ham bag was hanging, because it was time to take it down. This is a fairly heavy job, so Bertie heaved at the bag and nearly fell when he found the bag had almost no weight in it. The rats had eaten the entire centre of the ham.

Bertie had a great love for children. There is a story that it was while retrieving a football for some children that he fell from a tree and sustained back injuries. Probably the more accurate version of the story is that he was trying to find baby birds for cod bait when he fell from one of the pine trees which formed the boundary between his and Artie’s

properties. In any event, the injury led to arthritis, which crippled him for the rest of his life. He was uncomplaining, despite having to get around with the aid of two crutches and having to perform many of the orcharding tasks, such as watering, mulching and hoeing, on his hands and knees.

Lydia was not only an excellent cook and housekeeper, but of invaluable assistance on the orchard. She was a keen walker and in later life often walked to visit friends and relatives.

Bertie, Lydia and Ken worshipped regularly in the Lutheran Church, Doncaster.

Lydia died in the Box Hill Hospital on June 11th, 1959 and was buried in the Templestowe Cemetery.

In the early 1960s, Bertie survived an experience which would have killed many people. He was paying his usual visit to Artie by walking along the headland which connected their homes, when one of his crutches slipped and he fell into a beehive which was kept by Artie’s top dam. When Ern and Joyce found him, they removed 81 bee stings from him. Doctors later removed another 118!

By 1964, Ken had been forced to leave the orchard to find a more reliable income at the Blue

Moon Fruit Co-operative in Blackburn, and Bertie subdivided and sold all but five acres of the original 20.

Bertie had a serious fall in 1975 which rendered him unable to walk, and he was admitted to Mont Calm Private Hospital, Camberwell, where he spent the last six years of his life. He died on January 22nd, 1981 at the age of 96 years and six months. He is buried at Templestowe Cemetery in the same grave as Lydia.

The old home has been demolished to make way for a housing estate now, but one landmark remains. After the Great War of 1914-18, an Avenue of Honour was planted along Blackburn Road. There were a few trees left over, and Bertie was given one of these, which he planted about 50 yards behind the stables. This grew into an enormous tree which still thrives, despite being pruned rather severely on a couple of occasions. When the present owner was told of the tree’s significance, she erected a plaque on it. This is probably the only surviving tree from the original Avenue of Honour batch, as the Avenue was bulldozed in 1992 to allow for the widening of Blackburn Road.

KENNETH JOHN AUMANN

Kenneth John Aumann was born on December 17th, 1926, the only child of Johann Otto Albert Aumann and Esther Lydia nee Blobel.

As a young boy, Ken used to play in the back yard and sometimes got lonely. He would then jump the fence and go visiting his cousins Wal, Claris, Joyce, Em and Doris who lived on the neighbouring property.

Bertie responded to this by extending the fence upwards with chicken wire. This wasn’t a problem for Ken, who was quite a capable climber. After a second extension still couldn’t hold him, Bertie admitted defeat. Ken would often be found at his Uncle Artie’s.

Ken attended Templestowe Primary School and Box Hill Technical School, obtaining his Merit Certificate on November 17th, 1939. He went to work with Bertie on the orchard in Oliver’s Road.

On March 19th, 1949, Ken married Gwendoline Adelaide Wanke in the Presbyterian Church at Berwick. Gwen was bom on December 27th, 1928 at Berwick, a daughter of Hermann Immanuel Wanke and Frieda Emilie nee Wessel. Ken’s Uncle Will Blobel was married to Gwen’s Auntie Adelaide nee Wanke, and it was while visiting their uncle and aunt that they met. The courtship continued when Ken began attending the Narre Warren dance with his cousin Lindsay Aumann.

Ken and Gwen built a small weatherboard house adjacent to his parents’ house. This was a two bedroom house, and was satisfactory when their first

Two more children, Alan and Carolyn, completed the family. All of these children began their education at Templestowe Primary School. It may be some sort of record that Templestowe Primary continuously had at’

Ken worked the orchard until the early sixties, when a freak summer hailstorm wiped out an entire season’s crop and Ken had to look elsewhere for a more stable income. He gained employment at the Blue Moon Fruit Co-operative in Blackburn and worked there as a travelling sales representative, visiting orchards in such places as Bacchus Marsh, Panton Hills, Wangaratta and Beechworth.

Ken and Gwen were faithful members of the Lutheran Church, Doncaster, where Ken served for many years as an elder. He was also a member of the Templestowe Cemetery Trust. Gwen was a staunch member of the Ladies Guild, and was one of the innovators of the Arts and Crafts Show, which became an annual event at the Lutheran Church.

Ken developed diabetes in his later years, a trait which seems to have been inherited from the Blobel family. He died in the Austin Hospital on May 18th, 1969, after suffering a heart attack at the early age of 43 years. His future daughter-in-law, Dianne, said of him: “If you had to give your most lasting impression of Ken, it would be his friendliness, his cheerfulness and his ability to always have a joke with you.” His untimely death left David, 18, just beginning university; Linda, 13, was about to enter the workforce; Alan, eight, and Carolyn, five, were still at primary school.

Gwen undertook training as a typiste-telephonist and went to work at Mitcham High School. On a meagre wage, she looked after her family and her father-in-law. In the early eighties she sold the block of land which she inherited from Bertie at Oliver’s Road, and moved to Fox Road, Narre Warren. She contracted cancer and died in Beiwick Hospital on October 18, 1983. She is buried with Ken in the Lawn Cemetery at Templestowe, Victoria.

Annie was active in the church and the Ladies Guild, but had many outside interests too. She was secretary of the Mothers’ Club at East Doncaster Primary School for a time and was involved with C.W.A. She was also interested in her garden, which she always kept looking beautiful. As a member of the Box Hill Horticultural Group, she won many prizes from their shows. Everyone who visited was made very

Christiana Johanna Dehnert was born at Kohlhohe, Silesia, Prussia, on March 17th, 1842; the second daughter of Carl Samuel Aumann and Johanne Eleonore nee Sommer.

Christiana came to Australia with her father, stepmother, brothers and sister when she was only 11 years of age.

On August 11th, 1862, she married Rheinhold Traugott Dehnert, who was born on April 25th, 1837, at Olan, Silesia, Prussia; the son of Carl Dehnert and Marie nee Hanke.

Rheinhold had come to Australia on the ship, Louisa, from Hamburg, arriving in Melbourne on February 2nd, 1855. His age on the passengers list was given as 17 years. His was the only name of Dehnert to appear on this list, so it would appear that he was the only member of his family to migrate on that voyage. His brother, Robert, had arrived in the Colony some time earlier and owned a brick making factory in Victoria Street, Abbotsford. Rheinhold went to work for him, and while there, met his future brother in-law, Carl Aumann, who worked at the factory for a short time in about the late 1850’s.

Later, Rheinhold went to work carting goods between Melbourne and the gold fields, travelling between Benton’s Hill and Ballan, where a third horse was needed as the remaining distance was too great a haul for two horses. On the way, he camped at Pike’s Creek.

George Street, Doncaster, Victoria, was originally called German Lane, in the area then known as Waldau. This is where Rheinhold purchased land in

the estate which stretched from Blackburn Road to Victoria Street. Previously this section had been purchased from the Crown in 1853 by a group of Germans; Friedrich Straube, Johann Hilbig, Johann Walther and Andrew Kaiser. Rheinhold’s brother, Robert, purchased Hilbig’s large section and in I860, sold 21 acres of it to Rheinhold. The land was then virgin bush, or yellow box and she-oak, which Rheinhold cleared, using an axe, spade and pick to prepare it for 22 acres of vines. It was on this land that he built his home previous to his marriage to Christiana. Christiana’s brothers and sisters lived close to her in Waldau and her eldest sister, Caroline Finger, came to live opposite eight years after Christiana’s marriage. ( Her brother-in-law Henry Finger, (purchased the land previously owned by Friedrich Straube.)

For many years, Rheinhold was famous for his table grapes which he retailed in the Victorian markets. Later he became a successful pear grower and at one time was known as the “Pear King”.

During the 1880’s, he extended the orchard by up to 90 acres, buying more land south almost as far as Doncaster Road.

Rheinhold was well known for his astuteness, establishing his sons on grazing properties. All monies loaned to them had to be paid back.

In 1897 he built a new home in George street, and the following description of this building is taken from a Doncaster-Templestowe Historical Society newsletter by Lynne Crawley:-

u.He erected the existing six rooms Italianate brick house on George Street. The walls are brick plastered over and scribed to imitate stone and the corners are decorated with artificial quoins. The house is entered by three doors from the verandahs on the north, west and south . The front door opens on to an elegant passage divided by high Gothic arches supported on arcanthus mouldings. The bathroom and laundry were in a detached building at the rear.

The family had a large house to live in but now spent most of the time in the kitchen. At night Rheinhold always carried a candle to light the way up the passage to bed. Even after the electricity was laid on, he still used the candle. Changes have taken place since the house was first built. Rheinhold Dehnert’s ninety year old home has retained its original appearance and character as it shelters under the pines that have grown up around it. ”

Rheinhold and Christiana had a family of seven sons and three daughters -— the eldest, Carl, died seven days after he was born on June 13th, 1863, and also another son, Paul Rheinhold, born December 17th, 1871, died at the age of four years. These two are buried in the Waldau Cemetery, Doncaster, Victoria.

Henry and Annie, the only two of the family not to marry, lived with their parents and remained

living in the house after their parents had both died. Henry died in 1961 and Annie in 1967. The home went to their sister, Augusta, the orchard previously having been sold, which reduced the land to one acre around the home. In 1969, Augusta sold the home.

Christiana died on September 3rd, 1922, at the age of 80 years and was buried in the Box Hill Cemetery, Victoria. Rhienhold, had no serious illness until he reached the age of 101 years, and died at the age of 102 years, on January 1st, 1940. He was also buried in the Box Hill Cemetery.

Five of his children lived to over 90 years, one attaining 99 years of age. The other adults lived well into their eighties.

Rheinhold and Christiana were devout Christians, rearing their children in the same manner and were active members of the Lutheran Church, Doncaster.

Carl Dehnert was born on June 6th, 1863, at Waldau, Doncaster, Victoria; the eldest child of Rheinhold Traugott Dehnert and Christiana Johanna nee Aumann.

However, Carl only lived for seven days, dying of convulsions, and was buried on June 14th, 1863, in the Waldau Cemetery, Doncaster. He was the 19th person to be buried there, 13 of them were children under the age of six years.

The 1st burial was August Lenkerstoff who died on December 7th, 1834; the son of August and Christine Lenkerstoff. August Lenkerstoff was the builder of the 1st Lutheran Church which stood on this site. The land at this time was still owned by Friedrich Straube, who later donated the land for a burial ground and the erection of the Church. The

2nd burial was that of Caroline Uebergang the wife of Gottfried Uebergang. She died on January 1st, 1855.

The cemetery was closed in October 1888, because of increasing seepage from the graves into the nearby Ruffey’s Creek. The last burial was a child, Ludwig Thomsen who died on June 24th, 1888.

For many years after, the cemetery was cared for by John Finger, but during World War 11 all of the tombstones were destroyed through vandalism. It is now cared for by the Doncaster and Templestowe Historical Society.

Minna Christiane Dehnert was born on August 9th, 1864, at Waldau, Doncaster, Victoria; the eldest daughter of Rheinhold Traugott Dehnert and Christiana Johanna nee Aumann.

She was educated at the school run by Pastor Max von Schramm, in Doncaster Road, Doncaster.

On August 6th, 1885, Minna was married at the Lutheran Church, Waldau, Doncaster, to Friedrich Conrad Schuhkraft who was born on May 22nd, 1861, at Waldau, Doncaster; the son of Godfried Friedrich Schuhkraft and Maria Theresa nee Fankhauser. The ceremony was conducted by Pastor Max von Schramm and witnesses were

George Schuhkraft and Charles Aumann. Friedrich (Fred) and Minna moved into a new home on his orchard property in Serpells Road, Templestowe. This home was built by his brother, George Schuhkraft, and is on a prime position in Serpells Road. The home still stands with the original portion intact with a verandah and added rooms.

In 1905, the family moved to an orchard property at the corner of Yarra and Whitehorse Roads, Croydon, Victoria, where they lived for a number of years before shifting to Sandringham, Victoria.

Minna and Fred were devout Christians and were foundation members of the Croydon Presbyterian Church. Fred was a member of the Session when the Church was opened in 1907, and also the Board of Management and acted as Church Treasurer.

A tribute to the life and work of Mrs Minna C. Schuhkraft was printed in the Chronicle, July

1948:-

From the commencement of the Croydon Presbyterian Church in 1907 until 11th. June, 1948, Mrs Schuhkraft was intimately associated with its activities and progress. Worship was conducted by early Presbyterians at Bushy Creek, then the centre of the district, before the first small

venture of establishing a Church at Croydon was considered. She, with her husband and family, belonged to that early band of pioneers.

The first Croydon records read “Mr Schuhkraft and Mr Wallace went around the Lilydale Presbyterians and Mrs Schuhkraft and Mrs Gordon went around their friends at Croydon, ”

(to secure help for the new Church). They overcame transport and other difficulties, bought land, (part of the present block ), raised money and erected a building suitable for the needs of the district.

The Schuhkraft family were active in Sunday School work, in the choir, Board Management, Ladies Guild and the P. W.M. U.

After the sale of their orchard in Whitehorse Road, Mr and Mrs Schuhkraft removed to Sandringham but still continued association with the Croydon Church and frequently were present with Mr and Mrs A.C. Chandler. After the death of her husband, Mrs Schuhkraft divided her time between the homes of members of her family, always giving help where most needed. Her last visit to Kilsyth was in anticipation of the boronia season, and in her own words during her last illness, 7 came to help and here I am.

She was a generous contributor of time and money, as interested and helpful to the home church as she was to philanthropic and mission enterprises.

The ‘Mother” of the Croydon Church had no need to proclaim herself as a Christian. Her radiant personality and joyful friendship mirrored her love of the Master. She truly loved Christ and could not hide her happiness. By example and teaching she added to the Church many who saw her Christianity in action. Her life was fragrant, her happiness infectious and her response to the call of the Master to rest in Him glorious.

She had joined those great pioneers of our Church whose course is run and have gone to their reward.

We who knew her, honour her memory and accept the challenge to carry on the work she and other pioneer members of this Church so vigorously and earnestly started.

The Minister’s Chair and five communion chairs were a gift from Mrs Schuhkraft in memory of her husband. In 1949, the family gave the carved mountain ash pulpit in memory of their parents.

In later years, the family lived for a short time in Dubbo New South Wales, and also Sandringham, Victoria. For two years they lived in South Africa but returned to Sandringham where Fred died on December 12th, 1931, and was buried in the Old Cheltenham Cemetery, Victoria. Minna continued her connection with the Croydon Church as she lived with members of her family.

It was while she was staying with her daughter, Flora Chandler at Kilsyth, that Minna died on June 11th, 1948. She was also buried in the Old Cheltenham Cemetery.

Minna and Friedrich were blessed with three sons and three daughters.

FLORA ALVINA ROSAMUND SCHUHKRAFT

Flora Alvina Rosamund Schuhkraft was born on May 11th, 1886, at Templestowe Victoria; the eldest child of Friedrich Conrad Schuhkraft and Minna Christiane nee Dehnert.

Flora was educated at the Templestowe School and in her younger days learnt painting from a Mr Lawrie Smith. Evidence of her work was to be seen in the dining room of the home in Serpell’s Road, Templestowe. The fireplace carried a timbered surround with a mirror panel either side and above, and another mirror between two shelves. Flowers were painted at the sides of the mirror, with white swans near rushes, and on either side were butterflies.

Later in life, Flora married Archibold Charles

Chandler, who was born on January 28th, 1875, at Croydon, Victoria, the son of William Chandler and Kate nee Timewell. Archie was the first white child born locally. He had been previously married and had a family of two sons and a daughter. Flora and Archie had no family.

Archibold Charles Chandler.

They made their home at “Wattle Bank”, the Chandler family home in Kilsyth, Victoria. Archie operated a nursery here and was noted for growing daffodils and boronia. Archie developed the red boronia.

Archie was a pioneer of the Croydon Horticultural Society, where he was Secretary for many years and President for 17 years. He was an original member of the Croydon Coolstore Trust. His greatest love was the Croydon Presbyterian Church where he saw to the weekly floral decorations for 35 years. Both he and Flora took a very active part in the life of the Church.

A plaque in the Church reads:

“To the Glory of God and in memory of Archibold C. Chandler, a beloved Elder and Session Clerk of this Church, 193 7-1953, who was called to higher service on October 3rd, 1953■ His great love for this Church was manifest in the beautiful floral

decorations which he placed here each Sunday for thirty-five years. To know him was to love him. Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow. ” Archie died in Melbourne and was interred at the Springvale Crematorium, Victoria.

Flora was the first organist at the Croydon Church, a position she held for over 20 years. She was living in Toorak when she died on November 14th, 1976, and was also interred in the Springvale Crematorium, Victoria.

FRIEDRICH RHEINHOLD HERBERT SCHUHKRAFT

Friedrich Rheinhold Herbert Schuhkraft was born on July 4th, 1888, at Templestowe, Victoria; the son of Friedrich Conrad Schuhkraft and Minna Christiane nee Dehnert.

Herbert was baptised on August 12th, 1888, at the Lutheran Church, Waldau, Doncaster, Victoria, by Pastor Max Schramm. Sponsors were Christiane Dehnert, Charles Aumann, Theresa Schuhkraft and Rheinhold Dehnert.

He was educated at the Templestowe School. His family were living in Serpell’s Road, Templestowe, in a house that still stands today at No 52-54 Serpell’s Road.

In 1912, Herbert went to Dubbo, New South Wales, and camped in a tent on land he had purchased. This portion of land was part of the Old Terramungameal Estate, and it is here that he built a home and lived there for the rest of his life. He had a great love for the land.

In 1917, Herbert married Ella Priselle nee Lucke, who was born on March 5th, 1892, at Korong Vale, Victoria; the daughter of Frederick Lucke and Elizabeth nee Cluff.

Herbert and Ella worked the mixed farm 12 miles from Dubbo, and here they raised their family of two daughters. Herbert was a public spirited man

who joined in community activities, and a man of simple tastes who always kept his promises. A strong Christian, the family worshipped regularly at the Presbyterian Church, where Herbert was Superintendent of the Sunday School for a number of years.

Ella died on January 3rd, 1961, at Dubbo, New South Wales and Herbert died on November 17th, 1963, and both were interred at the Orange Crematorium, New South Wales.

MINNA LILLIAN SCHUHKRAFT

Minna Lillian Schuhkraft was born on June 21st, 1890 at Templestowe, Victoria; the daughter of Friedrich Conrad Schuhkraft and Minna Christiane nee Dehnert. She was educated at the Templestowe School where her brothers and sisters also attended.

On June 21st, 1911, Lillian married at the Presbyterian Church, Croydon, to Samuel William Maggs, who was born on January 1st, 1889, at Ringwood, Victoria, the son of Samuel Maggs and Elizabeth Ann nee Ronnis. The Schuhkraft family

had been associated with this Church from its beginning, and their wedding was one of the first to be held there.

Lillian and Samuel made their home on an orchard property just west of the present Croydon Hotel in Maroondah Highway. In 1911, they sold the orchard, and built a house in Lacey Street, Croydon, for 285 pounds. Samuel also purchased a Garage on the south side of the railway line near the crossing and ran the first motorised taxi service at Croydon from there.

Later, the family moved to a farming property at Buln Buln, and on selling this, Samuel became an Estate Agent at Sandringham, until he returned to farming at Heath Hill, where he also worked dredging the Koo-wee-rup swamp.

Samuel later completed a Correspondence course to become a telephone mechanic, working first at the Brighton Exchange when the family lived at Hampton. He then worked at the Warragul Exchange and finally, for a short time at the Ringwood Exchange when he retired.

Lillian and Samuel had a family of five sons and two daughters. In Lillian’s younger days, she taught music for a short time and while at Warragul, she was organist at the Presbyterian Church. After her husband’s death, she enjoyed croquet at Ringwood, and also sang in the Church choir.

Samuel died on January 15th, 1955 at Ringwood, and was interred at the Springvale Crematorium. Lillian died on January 19th, 1974, at Leongatha, Gippsland, and was buried in the Lilydale Cemetery, Victoria.

MINNA CHRISTINE (DOLLY) SCHUHKRAFT

Minna Christine (Dolly) Schuhkraft was born at Templestowe, Victoria, on May 19th, 1896; the youngest child of Friedrich Conrad Schuhkraft and Minna Christiane nee Dehnert.

Dolly was educated at the Templestowe School and would have finished her education at Croydon after the family had moved there in 1905.

On July 26th, 1921, Dolly married at Buluwayo, Rhodesia, Africa, to Frederic Richard Bell who was born at Albury, New South Wales, on April 28th, 1888; son of John Bell and Ada nee Taylor.

Dolly met Frederic at Dubbo, New South Wales, however Frederic went to a job in Capetown, South Africa and when Dolly went to Capetown, she found he had been transferred to Rhodesia. She then went to Rhodesia alone by rail, and it was here that the couple were married.

Frederic was General Manager of the electrical and musical instrument firm of Polliack. He also served in the 1914-18 War. When the family returned to Australia, Frederic worked for Tyresales in South Melbourne. This firm had the contract for retreading tyres for the Met Buses.

Their family consisted of a daughter and son, both born in Johannesberg, South Africa. Dolly was a devoted mother and good housewife.

Before the 1939-45 War, the family returned to Australia and Frederic died on May 3rd, 1955 at Brighton, Victoria, and Dolly on November 3rd, 1981, at her daughter’s home in Mt Eliza. Both were interred at the Springvale Crematorium, Springvale, Victoria.

Carl Rheinhold Dehnert was born on May 21st, 1867, at Waldau, Doncaster, Victoria; the 3rd child of Rheinhold Traugott Dehnert and Christiana Johanna nee Aumann. He was educated in a school in Doncaster run by Pastor Max von Schramm, and then joined his father on the orchard.

On September 19th, 1894, he married Anna Maria nee Hanke at the Lutheran Church, Doncaster. Anna was born at Doncaster on July

15th, 1869; the daughter of Carl Wilhelm Hanke and Hannah nee Pacholke. The couple had a family of two sons and one daughter.

In 1893, Carl Rheinhold purchased a property at Bradshaws Creek, via Ballan, Victoria, consisting of 500 acres of rich grazing country. Known as “LilyVale”, the pasture raised splendid cattle and sheep. Fine comeback wool was also developed and during the 1934-35 season, AAA-CBK wool

from the property realised top price of the day in Melbourne. The Eastern Moorabool River runs through the land and with the purchasing of adjoining farms, the acreage was increased to 1500 acres.

Family and farm responsibilities combined to make life active and fulfilling. The Presbyterian Church was a great interest, along with involvement in the support of local welfare- Anna was a staunch member of the Red Cross at Ballan. Hospitality was given generously and visitors were plied with good food and fruits to take home. On almost any Sunday, even if farm work had necessitated that Anna travel on her own, she could be seen in the hooded buggy with Dolly, the pony leading the

way to Ballan and Church. They lived at “LilyVale” until 1940, when Carl Rheinhold and Anna retired and moved into Ballan to live. Sons, Ossie and Roy jointly took over the management of the property.

On the 60th Anniversary of their wedding, the long partnership was terminated by Anna’s death, the Ballan newspaper wrote: “Mrs Dehnert died last Sunday night in her 87th year. Deceased was Miss Anna Hanke of Doncaster where she married in 1894. The newly-weds made their home in the Ballan district and remained there ever since as highly esteemed residents. She enjoyed good health until a few years ago, and her illness took her into hospital practically on the eve of a little celebration for the Golden Wedding, ”

Anna Maria died in the Bacchus Marsh Hospital on September 19th, 1954, and Carl Rheinhold died in the same hospital on October 24th, 1957. Both are buried in the Ballan Cemetery, Victoria.

“LILYVALE”

As well as fat lamb production, the brothers developed a Hereford/Aberdeen Angus cross for beef production as vealers and aged beef, hence the full utilisation of their pasture improvement plan.

Through careful management the family property was a successful and satisfying enterprise for the two families. Ian, Ossie’s son, worked with his father and Uncle after he had finished school and National Service Training.

Roy’s daughters, Jeanette and Alison were keen to assist and would be found in the sheep yards or the

The cousins at “LilyVale” and “Fernhill”, the later owned by W.A. (Allie) and C.A.(Bert) Dehnert, Ossie and Roy’s uncle and cousin always supported each other and worked closely together.

Ossie’s health deteriorated in 1971 and Roy accepted his nephew, Ian, as a partner. In 1980, Roy and Sine decided to sell “LilyVale” and retire, Roy’s nephew, Ian was able to keep Roy’s interests in “LilyVale”.

LINDA MARIE DEHNERT

Linda Marie Dehnert was born on June 30th, 1893, at Doncaster, Victoria; the daughter and eldest child of Carl Rheinhold Dehnert and Anna Maria nee Hanke.

Linda’s early years were spent on her father’s property “LilyVale”, Ballan, Victoria. On May 3rd, 1921, she married at St Andrews Church, Ballarat, Victoria, to Ernest William Latchford who was born on January 26th, 1889, at Goulburn Weir, Victoria; the son of Richard George Latchford and Ada nee Doran.

Ernest was an Officer in the Australian Regular Army stationed at the Small Arms School, Randwick, New South Wales. He had recently returned to Australia from service in Siberia with the British

ERNEST ROY DEHNERT

Ernest Roy Dehnert was born on July 7th, 1904 at “LilyVale”, Ballan, Victoria; the youngest child of Carl Rheinhold Dehnert and Anna Maria nee Hanke. Roy attended the Bunding and Ballan State Schools, then worked on the family property with his father and brother.

On March 2nd, 1940, at Buninyong, Victoria, Roy married Jeannie Hunter (Sine) nee Ross who was

born on February 10th, 1911, at Wallaroo, South Australia; the daughter of Archibold Hamilton Ross and Euphemia May nee Thorburn.

Roy’s father retired in 1940 into Ballan leaving the property “LilyVale” in the hands of his two sons. Roy and Sine lived on “LilyVale” where they had a family of two daughters.

Roy was always keen with — things mechanical.

He purchased his first motor bike at the age of 16 years and had to wait two years before he could obtain a licence at the cost of thirty-five pounds. A feature of the bike was the gas (carbide) lamp. He purchased his first car in 1923, a Chevrolet. He was responsible for installing — electric light — at “LilyVale”. Prior to 1940 the first lighting plant engine was just 12 volts in capacity.

Roy pursued many interests, including his commitment to the Ballan Presbyterian Church, where he was an Elder and Session Clerk for many

years. He served on the Buding State School Committee and enjoyed a game of golf.

Sine was well known for her community involvements — Church Committees, Red Cross, C.W.A. and for her musical ability -as an organist, and particularly her singing. A keen interest in later years, shared by both Sine and Roy was the Ballarat Organ Society and later the Bacchus Marsh Organ Society

Roy and Sine now live in retirement at Bacchus Marsh, Victoria.

The brothers, Carl Rheinhold (Reiny) and Allie often worked together in establishing pasture improvement for the purpose of running livestock, both sheep and cattle. The brothers and their sons were pioneers in growing the summer fodder crop of rape. They also planted pine trees, to act as wind breaks for stock.

Allie had a love of good quality beef cattle. He commenced a Hereford Stud, purchasing from Yellow Stud at Newlands. He won a trophy at the Ballarat Show for the best “aged Hereford”. Roy, his nephew also remembers that to transport this bull (and others), Allie used to walk the bull to the railway station at Ballan, some five miles away, then load it into a goods train to Ballarat and then return.

Alfred (Allie) and Sarah retired to Ballarat, from where Allie continued to manage his Hereford and later Aberdeen Angus Stud.

Her schooling would have begun at Pastor Schramm’s school, which was also attended by her brothers and sisters, but when the school closed in 1884r Anna’s education continued at the East Doncaster School.

Anna lived at home with her parents and continued living there after their deaths. Having been raised in a strict Lutheran family, she attended the Doncaster Lutheran Church regularly all her life.

Like many women of her time, she was an excellent cook and was also skilled at crochet work. Fond of her garden, she grew not only flowers but many vegetables for her own use.

She not only cared for her parents but also for her brother when he came back from Ballan. He lived with his sister until his death.

Anna died on February 8th, 1967 and was buried in the Box Hill Cemetery, Victoria. She left the

ARTHUR LOUIS 1913-1993

ALBERT ERNEST 1914- JEAN FRASER WORRALL 1916-

Albert Hermann Dehnert was born on April 7th, 1879, at Waldau, Doncaster, Victoria; the eighth child of Rheinhold Traugott Dehnert and Christiana Johanna nee Aumann.

Albert Hermann was baptised on August 27th, 1879, by Pastor Max von Schramm at the Lutheran Church, Waldau, Doncaster. Sponsors were his Uncles, Carl and August Aumann, and his cousin, Anna Finger. He was educated first at Pastor Schramm’s School in Doncaster Road, Doncaster, and then at the East Doncaster School.

On leaving school, he worked on the home orchard and later went farming with his younger brother, Oswald, on a property at The Rock, New South Wales. However this venture was not successful.

In 1912, at Mt Egerton, Victoria, Albert married Henriette Beatrice nee Hill who was born on July 27th, 1883, at Ranceby, Gippsland, Victoria; the daughter of Frederick William Hill and Clara nee Fox.

Henriette Beatrice was educated at the Bunding School, Victoria, where her father had purchased a property. She was the eldest of five children. Of her four brothers, three served in the A.I.F., one was

awarded the Military Cross and another a Military Medal. She was an outstanding cook and housekeeper, also capable at sewing — as many of her generation were.

Albert and his wife were members of the Bridgewater Presbyterian Church where the family worshipped regularly.

Albert worked the Bunding property for his father-in-law until the boys left school, when he purchased “Memsie” at Bridgewater, in 1932. This property consisted of 1000 acres and carried sheep and cattle with a little cropping. “Memsie” is the homestead portion of a large grazing lease of 43,000 acres selected in 1830, later reduced to 15,000 acres freehold in 1880 and subdivided in 1905.

The original lease was to J. Catto for 100 pounds a year. The homestead stands on the banks of the Loddon River and consists of seven bed rooms and several living rooms. The original home was built in 1836 of bluestone and was cement rendered. The second and larger portion was added in 1883. This section is brick lined internally and clad with timber externally. A verandah runs right around the house, with wrought iron facia and posts. The walls of the entrance hall are lined with the original copper

embossed wall paper and the floor is tiled. There are three columns at the far end of the hall with a doorway leading to the rest of the house. To the right of the hall is a large lounge with a white marble fireplace. A pair of eight foot high by five foot wide double in-cavity sliding doors open into a very large dining room, which boasts a black marble fireplace and a large bay window. The home has 14 foot six inch ceilings throughout.

In the back yard is a large underground well, which is still in use today. On the left is a covered walkway leading to a detached kitchen, with a very large two oven stove and a pantry with servant’s quarters behind. Alongside this building, there are steps down to a large cool room set in the ground.

The walls are nine inches thick, clad inside and out with timber packed with charcoal. The door is similarly built. To maintain coolness, the floor is of slate, while a bench going right around the room is also of m inch dressed slate, with other shelves above. On the bench is a separator, butter churn and various utensils used in the preparation of food.

A tunnel which is a foot in diameter was included to create a cool draught. Adjoining this room are other rooms used as offices.

Bluestone coach stables stand on the right side of the yard, which would once undoubtedly have housed many horse drawn vehicles and a workshop.

The homestead stands half a mile from the road, and the entrance gate passes between the coach stables and a bluestone winery with a magnificent arched doorway. The large front yard once had a Louis and Ernest Dehnert.

flower garden with an orchard beyond, which was irrigated from the Loddon River.

Albert’s main hobby was gardening, and he was generally found working in the garden and caring for his fruit trees. He was a man with no great ability with stock but left the running of the farm to his two sons, Louis and Ernest.

“Memsie” was a stopping place for two of the Aumann boys from Murtoa. Paul and Rheinhold had purchased properties at The Rock, New South

Louis the eldest son, lived at “Memsie”, Bridgewater, Victoria.

ARTHUR LOUIS DEHNERT

Arthur Louis Dehnert was born at Ballarat, Victoria, on June 23rd, 1913; the eldest child of Albert Hermann Dehnert and Henriette Beatrice nee Hill.

He was first educated at the Echuca State School and later at the Bendigo School of Mines. From 1932, he worked on “Memsie”; first with his father and later with his brother, Ernest. For many years he ran “Memsie” alone, with cattle grazing as the main operation. “Memsie’s” original orchard and garden have now disappeared, as the sole management of the farm left no time for these activities.

During the 1939-43 War, Louis enlisted in the A.I.F. for a short time only, his brother, Ernest spent time in New Guinea, the South-West Pacific and Borneo.

Louis attended the Presbyterian Church, which had been a family tradition. He was an active member of the Rural Fire Brigade, in which he held office of Secretary.

Louis resided in only a portion of the home, as it is to large for one person, but it is still kept in reasonable condition, retaining the atmosphere of those earlier days.

Louis died on July 7th, 1993 at Inglewood, Victoria and was interred in the Ballarat Crematorium, Victoria.

ALBERT ERNEST DEHNERT

Albert Ernest Dehnert was born on November 5th, 1914, at Ballarat, Victoria; the youngest child of Albert Hermann Dehnert and Henriette Beatrice nee Hill.

He was educated first at the Echuca State School and then the Bendigo School of Mines. On leaving school, he like his brother, Louis, settled down to farming life at “Memsie” with his father. After many changes of environment that the family had, the father then left the running of the property to Em and Louis.

Ern enlisted in the A.I.F. during the 1939-45 War, serving in New Guinea, South-West Pacific and Borneo.

In 1945, Ern married at Albert Park, Victoria, to Jean Fraser nee Worrall, who was born on June 4th, 1916, at Melbourne. Ern and Jean lived at

“Fernhill”, Ballan, Victoria for sometime, this location being more central than “Memsie”, while they were seeking suitable land to purchase.

In February 1947, Ern acquired a Soldiers Settlement Block near Casterton, Victoria. This property “Glen Carron” was formerly a portion of the Tusle Station. They first lived in a garage and “pre fab” dwelling, their real home they moved into in the summer of 1951.

Ern was involved in the Rural Fire Brigade in his district. On the property they have produced for many years fine Merino wool, now with the assistance of their son, John.

Ern and Jean had a family of one son and one daughter, and they live in semi retirement leaving the mnning of the farm to their son.

Heinrich Wilhelm (Harry) Aumann was born on March 12th, 1845, at Kohlhohe, Silesia, Prussia, the fifth child of Carl Samuel Aumann and Johanne Eleonore nee Sommer. He came to Australia with his father and step-mother, arriving in Melbourne on November 16th, 1853, on the ship Australia.

On August 1st, 1872, at St Paul’s Lutheran Church, Germantown, (Grovedale), he married Johanna Eleonore (Laura) nee Baum, who was born on May 18th, 1850, at Schwenten, Silesia, Prussia, the second child of Thomas Christian Baum and his first wife Anna Rosina Ellenore nee Lorenz. Laura was only four years of age when her family emigrated, and on reaching Australia, lived at Mt Duneed until her marriage. Pastor G. Heyer married Harry and Laura at St Paul’s on the same day as Laura’s sister Mathilda married Carl Fimmel. They all left together on the trip to their new homes.

Harry and Laura went to Murtoa where they took up a selection of 320 acres of land at Hopefield in the parish of Ashens in the same year. This block was five miles south of Murtoa where the couple firstly made their home in a tent amongst virgin timber and it was here that their first two children were born. The nearest water was some six miles to the south, the Wimmera River, which in summer months was only a series of waterholes. This environment was totally different from their homeland, with only bushland

and the occasional visit from Aborigines. The initial dwelling to be built was a small two roomed construction of split buloke timber and pug, clad with grey box slabs and a shingle roof. A large open fireplace and chimney incorporating a brick oven stood at one end. This humble abode was complemented with an underground cellar of similar construction. In about 1875, the first two rooms of the present house were built. The framework consisted of hewn pine beams, with walls of split pine and pug (rammed mud impregnated with straw). Exposed pine beams framed the ceiling, with a sawn board overlay doubling as a floor of an extensive loft. A corrugated iron roof displayed the very latest in modern roofing technology. Sometime later four rooms were added, with an enclosed verandah connecting the two buildings. The latter building was similar to the construction of the former, with the addition of milled timber. Weatherboard cladding and an eight foot verandah formed a weathering buffer. In this domicile fifteen children were bom and raised. A number of their descendants still reside in the Dunmunkle Shire. A great grandson, David Fletcher, now works the property.

When Harry and Laura first cleared the land, it was used mainly for wheat growing, but they also had a small dairy herd. Laura’s love for gardening provided the family meals. She continued to adopt the Polish tradition of wearing a head scarf. With

Heinrich Wilhelm Aumann’s first home at Ashens near Murtoa, Victoria.

her white hair knotted in a tight bun and dressed in black, she gave the appearance of a typical Polish country woman.

In 1890 Harry received an award for the best developed farm in the Colony and in the following year gained Second Prize for the best equipped farm in the Colony. His farming achievements were recognised as among the most creditable in the Murtoa district.

Both Hariy and Laura were hard working, and the family born at the farm was unusually large, consisting of seven sons and eight daughters. All lived to marry, with the exception of one daughter and a son, both of whom lived to over 70 years of age.

Hariy was naturalised on February 5th, 1900.

Harry died on April 1st, 1909, and was buried in the Murtoa Cemetery. Laura continued to live comfortably in the old homestead with her daughter, Anna.

The Dunmunkle Standard quotes:

It is with sincere and sympathetic regret that we are called upon to chronicle the deaths of two admirable citizens and excellent farmers in the passing of Mr H.H. Holtkamp and Mr H.W. Aumann.

. It is somewhat noteworthy that Messrs .Aumann and Holtkamp were about the same age, both 62, both highly esteemed members of Pastor Hiller’s Congregation, sat in the same pew, and only a few hours separated their times of starting for “The Better Land”. Mr Holtkamp died at Mr Petering’s residence, Murtoa, on Easter Sunday afternoon, and his old friend passed early on the following morning. ”

The paper goes on to say about Mr Aumann . . .

“The brief illness and unexpected death of well known pioneer caused a greater shock because of its suddenness. There are amongst us those who have known him for over 30 years, and during that considerable stretch of time his sturdy frame, good natured countenance, and independent bearing made him the very ideal of robust manhood and contentment. As a matter of fact, he, together with

his wife and numerous sons and daughters, all appeared to be immune to many of the epidemics and ailments that have made inroads into several of our homes, and to all appearance he seemed to those who saw him only a few days before his illness to be ‘good enough’for many years”.

One son who had lost his wife, went to Queensland and left his two daughters with Laura, who was 60 years of age at the time. The son never

returned as he was killed in an accident, so Laura reared the two girls.

Laura died on July 23rd, 1923, and was buried in the Murtoa Cemetery. She was a highly respected,

faithful and devout worshipper at St John’s Lutheran Church, Murtoa. She reared a large family and still found time to support others in need or assistance.

The Murtoa Advertiser of July 31st, 1925, stated:

“The irrevocable march of time is gradually finding the end of life’s journey for our pioneer settlers, as was exemplified on Thursday morning 23rd. inst., when the news spread that Mrs fohanna Eleonore Aumann of Ashens had suddenly passed away at the advanced age of 75 years. The deceased lady, who reared a large family, all of whom are highly respected, enjoyed robust health almost to the end, and it was only a few days prior to her death that she complained of indisposition and kept to her room, declining a medical man. On Thursday morning at 8.30, her daughter, Miss Anna, was horrified to find her mother dead on the floor, evidently from a heart failure.

Deceased was a faithful and devout worshipper at St John’s Lutheran Church, Murtoa, and was one of its warmest supporters. In cases of sickness and need, Mrs Aumann’s sympathy and assistance could always be relied upon; in fact her charity was being continually shown wherever there was scope for its exercise, without her name being disclosed. Business places were draped in respect to the memory of deceased, and deep sympathy is felt for members of the family.

Rev. Siegle delivered an impressive panegyric, after which a lengthy procession of motor cars and vehicles went to the resting place in Murtoa Cemetery”.

Although many children left the district, there are still a great number of Harry and Laura’s descendants residing in the Dunmunkle Shire.

On November 13th, 1901, Henry married at Murtoa, Ida Mathilda nee Breuer who was born on

January 23rd, 1881, at Blumberg, South Australia; the daughter of Carl Wilhelm Breuer and Marianne nee Schoradt.

Henry purchased a property at Ashens not far from his father’s property and this is where he lived after he married, the home being known as the “Red House”. It was mainly cropping with sheep and cattle. The home consisted of four main rooms with a very large kitchen and luncheon room detached. The bedrooms were also detached from

the main section. There was also a cellar which would always have home made hop beer on the shelves. The kitchen had a very large range in which bread kuchen was baked. Pigs were killed and wurst sausages and mettwurst made. There was a smoke house to cure the bacon and ham, poultry were kept, cows milked, ducks and peacocks roamed the garden. Two underground wells supplied water to the house, the only source of water for drinking.

When thrashing was being done two of Henry’s sisters Mathilda (Tilly) and Bertha, would come over and assist with the work. After thrashing there were many stacks of straw which were used to feed the stock after molasses had been diluted and sprinkled on the straw.

Henry and Ida were devout Christians both having been bought up in the Lutheran Church, but early this century went to the Presbyterian Church at Lubeck where Henry was a regular church member, found worshipping Sunday by Sunday with his family. When the children were young they would go to their grandparents’ home where Aunt Anna had Sunday School. Henry would go to church, sometimes walking a mile to meet the minister, Rev. Schussler. Both would then go by rail-trike five miles to church.

Henry was musical, playing the cornet in the Coromby Band, and with this musical talent he encouraged his children to learn music.

He was a playing member of the Lubeck Cricket Club and also played tennis, a sport he taught his children on the two courts at their home. For many years he was an active member of the Ashens School Committee and the Lubeck Progress Association.

Henry and Ida had a family of five sons and four daughters. One of his daughters spoke of him as the most wonderful and kind father, wishing she could be like him. His jovial and kindly nature attracted many friends and he was always a supporter of appeals for charitable objects.

Henry lost his wife, Ida, when she died on January 11th, 1928, about a year after their daughter, Clara Ida, who was 23 years of age when she died. Both were buried in the Murtoa Cemetery, Victoria.

Henry enjoyed good health all his life until just before he died, when he was admitted into hospital at Murtoa then Horsham where he died on October 23th, 1942, and was buried in the Murtoa Cemetery, Victoria.

OLGA MATHILDA AUMANN

Olga Mathilda Aumann was born on September 15th, 1902, at Murtoa, Victoria; the eldest child of Henry William Aumann and Ida Mathilda nee Breuer. She was educated at the Hopefield School and lived at home until her marriage at Murtoa on September 15th, 1926, to Frederick August Gardy.

Fred was born at Ashens near Murtoa on August 2nd, 1892; the son of Matthes Gardy and Auguste nee Washusen.

Following their marriage, Olga and Fred lived on the property at Ashens which consisted of over 1000 acres, and it was here they reared a family of four daughters and one son.

The family worshipped at the Lubeck Presbyterian Church and after this church closed, attended the Murtoa Uniting Church.

Fred’s interest other than the farm was his garden, growing vegetables which he sold in Lubeck.

Unfortunately he suffered from Ectodermal Dysplasia, which is a skin condition and had to keep out of the heat. In hot weather he would wear wet clothing and sleep in the cellar where it was cooler. Two of his grand-children and five of his great-grand-children are affected from the same condition.

Olga, a woman of great resourcefulness, coped all her life with minimal help. During her school days Fred and Olga Gardy, September 15th, 1926.

she developed a love of reading. Medical books her favourite, and at a young age wanted nothing more than to be a nurse. Her husband’s condition, particularly in later years, gave Olga the chance to use her skills in nursing, when she cared for her husband devotedly. It gave her satisfaction to assist her granddaughter fill out an application to train as a nurse.

She loved her family and her special flair with German Cake was known further afield than her

knitting ability. She made wonderful, finely knitted socks, enough that the Gardy family were never short of them.

Olga took an interest in the Senior Citizens, Ashens Cricket Club and the Blind Auxiliary.

Fred died at Horsham on January 7th, 1970, and Olga on March 22nd, 1990, at Horsham. Both were buried in the Murtoa Cemetery, Victoria.
