Ernestine Paulina Aumann was born on July 25th, 1874, at Glenorchy, Victoria; the eldest daughter and second child of Heinrich Wilhelm Aumann and Johanne Eleonore nee Baum.
After her schooling, Ernestine (Teenie) would have helped on the farm at home until she married on February 2nd, 1896, at St Johns Lutheran Church, Murtoa, Victoria, to Thomas Alfred Schaeche who was born in 1868, at Murtoa; the son of Heinrich Wilhelm Schaeche and Jane Elizabeth nee Hales.
Alfred and Teenie made their home in Warracknabeal, Victoria, where they lived for the rest of their lives.
The Warracknabeal Shire Rate Books make reference to Alfred Schaeche in 1897 as a tenant in Wood Street, and in 1898 a labourer-owner of a cottage in Anderson Street. 1903-04, Thomas Alfred Schaeche is recorded as a contractor and the owner of a cottage in Wood Street, Warracknabeal.
Alfred and his brother, Bill, worked together at Warracknabeal when they first came from Murtoa, their work being mainly labouring and contracting in the Warracknabeal district. Alfred later worked for the Warracknabeal Shire as a labourer for many
years, 1905-06 the Shire Rate Books refer to Alfred as contractor and owner of a cottage in Anderson Street, Warracknabeal.
Teenie was a person who loved her home and family, putting them before most other matters, this being her ambition of happiness and their welfare was put first. Her Christian background was shown by her great influence over her family in bringing them up in the Christian Faith. They were found attending the Methodist Church Sunday by Sunday.

Alfred and Ernestine and their eldest children.
Alfred and Teenie were blessed with 14 children, one stillborn, a daughter dying at eight weeks of age and a son who died at the age of three years.
Teenie built up a small dairy herd, her sons helping her to milk the cows before going to work, and the younger ones delivered the milk before they went to school. She later bought a horse and milk cart, her son Frank on leaving school became
her milkman. The cows paid well, which enabled her to purchase a motor car. When Teenie died the Methodist minister assisted with the milking until the dairy closed shortly after.
Alfred died on October 10th, 1938, at
Warracknabeal four years after Teenie’s death on March 12th, 1934. Both were buried in the Warracknabeal Cemetery, Victoria.
CLARA ELEONORA ELIZABETH SCHAECHE
Clara Eleonora Elizabeth Schaeche was born on July 19th, 1897, at Warracknabeal, Victoria; the eldest child of Thomas Alfred Schaeche and Ernestine Paulina nee Aumann. Clara attended school at Warracknabeal and on finishing her education assisted her mother in the family home and daily.
Clara married John Alexander Sinclair McRae,
a World War 1 Veteran. They were married in 1921 and moved into a new home almost opposite the Schaeche family home in Anderson Street, Warracknabeal.
Alex suffered a great deal of illness as a result of mustard gas effects suffered during the war in France. He continued to work at a local hardware store, pedalling on his bicycle to work each day and never owning a motor car or obtaining a licence.
After the death of Clara’s parents, her home became the family meeting place and it was common to call in on “Aunt” whenever family members were in Warracknabeal. In later years, Clara’s nephews and nieces attending the nearby High School enjoyed her cooking at lunch times and often stayed with her on a special occasions, like school socials.
Alex died on January 14th, 1956, at Warracknabeal and was buried in the Warracknabeal Cemetery. Clara outlived most of her family and died on August 23rd, 1979, at Warracknabeal, and was also buried in the Warracknabeal Cemetery, Victoria.
HENRY ALFRED SCHAECHE
Henry Alfred Schaeche was born on July 9th, 1898, at Warracknabeal, Victoria; the eldest son and second child of Thomas Alfred Schaeche and Ernestine Paulina nee Aumann.
Following his education at Warracknabeal he became a gardener and yard man for a local doctor. He worked later for the Victorian Railways as a patrolman and eventually a ganger. Over the years he became a familiar sight as he rode his push-bike to and from work, and to the creek to follow his
main recreation, fishing.
On February 21st, 1929, he married Elsie Victoria Lee nee Patullo who was born in 1901 at Carlton, Victoria; the daughter of James Patullo and Nancy nee Glover. Prior to her marriage, Elsie was a school teacher at Murtoa.
Harry and Elsie had no family. Elsie died on July 30th, 1965, at Warracknabeal, where Harry also died on February 26th, 1972. Both are buried in the Warracknabeal Cemetery, Victoria.

ERNEST FREDERICK SCHAECHE
Ernest Frederick Schaeche was born on January 6th, 1900, at Warracknabeal, Victoria; the third child of Thomas Alfred Schaeche and Ernestine Paulina nee Aumann.
He attended school at Warracknabeal and helped out with the milking duties in the family dairy prior to taking on the trade of blacksmith and farrier in Scott Street, Warracknabeal.
Ernie was a bachelor throughout his life and moved from the family home to live in a flat at the rear of sister Clara’s home in Anderson Street about the time he opened his own blacksmith’s shop.
Like his brothers and sisters he was keen on sport playing tennis and football successfully in his younger days. He was a member of the Warracknabeal Football Reserves Premiership team
in 1923. He was also a successful trainer of racing greyhounds in the Wimmera and Mallee area and as a farrier he was associated with a number of racing stables in the area, most notably the Fisher family of Brim. He was farrier for the horse Blacksmith, which was named for him, which won the Grand National Steeplechase in the 1950’s. The horse was trained by Reg Fisher.
The main source of his enjoyment was fishing and he was a regular visitor to the popular fishing areas of the region, including the Murray River and the Grampians. His niece Nola was a regular companion on his fishing excursions in later years.
Ernie died on March 7th, 1933, at Warracknabeal and was buried in the Warracknabeal Cemetery, Victoria.

After the War he returned and married in 1920 to Anne Rebecca Foran nee Murray who was born in 1899 at Kranbach, New South Wales; the daughter of Edward Murray and Rebecca Louise nee Biddle.

Herbert Leslie Schache was born on May 25th, 1904, at Warracknabeal, Victoria; the sixth child of Thomas Alfred Schaeche and Ernestine Paulina nee Aumann.
Herbert went to school at the Warracknabeal Primary School. This school had started as a private school conducted in a log hut in Devereaux Street on January 20th, 1873, then on March 4th, 1874 the school became No 1334, under the Head Master, John A. Sutcliffe, who was also the first postmaster
at Warracknabeal. In 1879 the Education Department decided to erect a new building on the corner of Anderson and Lyle Streets. On leaving school at the age of 13 years (thinking he was 14) Herbert worked as a farm hand then later on the family farm at Warracknabeal. He played football an his earlier years, later taking up tennis.
On March 25th, 1932, Herbert married Muriel nee Henman who was born at Warracknabeal on July 16th, 1907; the eldest child of Frederick Henman and
Annie nee Dawe. The wedding took place on the Henman’s property at Echunga, Victoria which was a wheat farm between Yaapeet and Hopetoun. Muriel attended the Hopevale Primary School No 3226, which started in 1895, the first Head Master being Elizabeth Murphy. This was a stone hall, but because of the narrow doors and the floor too close to the ground, the Department provided another building.
Muriel later attended the Galanungah Primary School No 3897 which opened in 1908 in a local hall, the teacher was Hilda M. Boyle. Prior to her marriage Muriel worked as a dress maker and also in a fruit shop at Warracknabeal.

GORDON KITCHENER SCHAECHE
Gordon Kitchener Schaeche was born at Warracknabeal, Victoria on August 28th, 1916; the 13th child of Thomas Alfred Schaeche and Ernestine Paulina nee Aumann. He was born at the height of World War 1, and this probably accounts for his given names honouring two of the heroes of the British Empire.
He was the youngest member of the family by a number of years, making him the centre of attention by his brothers and sisters who at times complained he was “spoiled” by his mother. He attended the Warracknabeal School, during which time he acquired the nickname of “Honey” which referred to his hair colouring.
He was keen on sport, especially football and tennis, which he pursued with success in future years, but was willing to try all sports and outdoor activities ranging from boxing to fishing.
Gordon chose teaching as a career and continued at Warracknabeal as a student teacher prior to commencing his studies at Melbourne Teachers College in the late 1930’s, courtesy of a loan from his brother Ernest. His first school was the tiny Mallee school at Watha near Hopetoun and this was close to
the Witney farm at Nyallo. Gordon had met Lola Enid Witney during his time at the Warracknabeal High School some years earlier, and so became a regular visitor to the farm at Nyallo. Gordon married Lola at Woomelang, Victoria on December 21st, 1940 and moved to Dreeite South near Colac. Lola was bom on June 6th, 1918 and boarded when she was attending the Warracknabeal High School. While at Dreeite South there were three of their four children bom.
Each Christmas, the growing family made the long journey, first by bus and train, later in their first car, an ancient soft topped Morris Cowley, to Woomelang for Christmas with Lola’s family.
Gordon later taught school at Lillimur, Brim and Dimboola. While at Dimboola, Lola died on September 29th, 1963 and was buried in the Woomelang Cemetery, Victoria. Gordon continued teaching at Dimboola although crippled with arthritis doing his work from a wheelchair until ill health caused him to retire in 1971. Janice, his daughter was teaching at Dimboola with her father.
Gordon died on June 22nd, 1972 at Dimboola, Victoria and was buried in the Woomelang Cemetery, Victoria.

She was educated at the Hopefield School and on leaving school worked at home until she married on September 9th, 1907; to Johann August Frederick Jaeger. August was born on January 1st, 1873; at Mount Gambier, South Australia, the son of Johann Heinrich Jaeger and Christiana Katina nee Gardy. He was one of eight children. Their marriage, like many of Emma’s family, was held at the home at Ashens.
August and his sister, Annie Schultz, both drew a Closer Settlement Block at Collingullie, New South Wales. Both travelled together to their blocks from their homes. August later sold this block and purchased 320 acres at The Rock, New South Wales, from a Mr Snodgrass. This property was known as
“Thornleigh” and it was here that Emma and August came after their wedding. Emma’s brother Barney came with them and purchased the block adjoining on the East. Here Emma shared in the farm work, milking a few cows, making butter and like most farmers wives of that time made bread and kuchen.
August obtained a hawker’s licence and on Saturdays sold butter, milk, fruit and vegetables at The Rock. At that time The Rock was a railway town which employed some 70 people.
One wedding present, promised by Emma’s brother Barney, was a hole in the ground. True to his word, Barney built an underground tank which supplied them with fresh cool water for the farm.
In 1928-29, August purchased another 900 acres adjoining the original block on the west, from Mr Collins, who originally owned The Rock Station. When Paul, Emma’s brother sold his property and returned to Murtoa, August purchased his farm, 600

Ernest August Aumann was born on August 23rd, 1881, at Ashens near Murtoa, Victoria; the seventh child of Heinrich Wilhelm Aumann and Johanne Eleonore nee Baum.
He was educated at the Hopefield School and when old enough and had saved enough money he bought farmland east of Rupanyup, Victoria, about ten miles from his home at Murtoa, a distance that made it easy for him to visit his mother.
In 1916, Ernest married Helena Frances nee Stark who was born in 1879; a daughter of John Stark and Frances Ellen nee Green. They made their home on the edge of the town on the north side of Rupanyup and Ernest would go out to the farm from here every day. Ella Louise Isbel, a niece of Ernest now owns the home where she resides.
Helena was a teacher at the Rupanyup School and took an active part in community life, prominent in Church life where she was Organist and Superintendent of the Sunday School at St Phillip’s Church of England, Rupanyup. Ernest and Helena attended church regularly. Helena was a

member of the Rupanyup Golf Club where she held the position of secretary.
On the farm Ernest had the first Jelbte tractor in the area. He was very fond of music, enjoyed playing the accordion until he purchased an early Edison Gramophone which he enjoyed playing.

Unfortunately, they were only married a little over four years when Helena lost her life in an accident. She was driving with a friend in the gig to Lubeck to visit friends when the horse, on passing a motor car bolted throwing both passenger and driver from the gig. Helena’s friend survived, but Helena died a short time later. This accident happened On December 8th, 1920, and Helena was buried in the Rupanyup Cemetery, Victoria.
Ernest was on the farm working when he received the sad news, a sad loss to him. Later he donated a Sunday School Hall at St Phillip’s Church in memory of Helena, but did not see the hall completed before he died. He entered hospital for surgery, the operation being successful, but developed meningitis and died on November 5th, 1921 at South Yarra, Victoria. He was also buried in the Rupanyup Cemetery, Victoria.

Ida Bertha Aumann was born on May 5th, 1883, at Ashens near Murtoa, Victoria; the ninth child of Heinrich Wilhelm Aumann and Johanne Eleonore nee Baum. Her education was at the Hopefield School where her brothers and sisters attended. Ida was the tallest of her seven sisters.
On August 12th, 1908, Ida married at Murtoa to Carl Johann Heintze who was bom on July 23rd, 1875, at Moppa, South Australia; the eldest child of Johann Heinrich Theodor Heintze and Johanna Maria Magdalene nee Schultz.
Carl (Charlie) was educated at the Koonunga School, South Australia. He was baptised in the home of his parents, by his Uncle, Pastor C.F.W. Heintze who also confirmed him at the Nain Lutheran Church, South Australia. Charlie was one of six children.
On leaving school he assisted with the work on his parents’ property, working mainly in the vineyard and with the growing of crops. Later he and a younger brother sharefarmed at Bundey, 45 kilometres north-east of Eudunda, South Australia,
where they embarked on wheat-growing. The country was saltbush and bluebush, more suitable for grazing. After several years this project was abandoned.
In 1896, Charlie moved to Victoria where he worked on a wheat farm near Coromby, midway between Minyip and Murtoa. After five years

working there, he purchased the property three kilometres north-east, of Minyip. Here he lived in a two roomed dwelling described as a “pug house”.
Carl and Ida Heintze. August 12th, 1908.
Dwellings such as this consisted of material of rough timber uprights plastered internally and externally with “pug”, a mixture of earth and straw. The interior walls and ceiling were whitewashed.
Charlie built a new weatherboard home, a verandah separating the house from the original “pug house”. These rooms were used for years as a

kitchen and dairy. This is where he bought his bride to live and where they raised the family of one daughter and two sons. This property, known as “The Daphne”, was originally covered with bulloak and box trees, and had been cleared with the exception of about 20 hectares, left for shelter and future use as a source of firewood and posts. Much of the clearing was carried out by Chinese miners, who sought work from the declining goldfields of Ballarat and Bendigo.
Ida was a keen gardener and because of this one would imagine why the home was so named. She would prune the fruit tress and enjoyed giving away fruit and vegetables that she had grown.
Charlie and Ida’s way of life and faithful church attendance were like their ancestors, loyal to God and their church, and the upholding of their convictions, which they handed down to their family. They attended St John’s Lutheran Church,
Kirchheim, situated about eight kilometres southwest of Minyip. This building was later shifted into Minyip. Both Charlie and Ida took an active part in the life of the church, as did their children. Charlie also took an active interest in civic life as a member of several town and farming organisations.
After having good health and a very successful life of farming, Charlie died on October 10th, 1950, at Minyip and was buried in the Minyip Cemetery, Victoria. Ida continued to live on the farm with her daughter, Edna and son Les. When Les married, She and Edna moved into a new home in Minyip where she continued to have good health. Here, naturally her main interest at home was the garden which she had always loved.
After being hospitalised for a short time, Ida died at Minyip on November 6th, 1967, seventeen years after her husband. She was buried in the Minyip Cemetery, Victoria.
EDNA MARIE HEENTZE
Edna Marie Heintze was born on August 21st, 1909, at Minyip, Victoria, the eldest child of Carl Johann Heintze and Ida Bertha nee Aumann.
On leaving school, she lived on the farm, “The Daphne”, at Minyip and when her brother, Les, married in 1956, she and her mother went to live in the township of Minyip.
A committed Christian, Edna has taken an active part in the life of St John’s Lutheran Church, Minyip, where she has worshipped regularly and taught Sunday School.
Following her mother’s death, Edna remained in the Minyip home, where she, like her mother, is a keen gardener.
Apart from her church, Edna is actively involved in the local C.W.A. and Red Cross.
VICTOR CARL HEINTZE
Victor Carl Heintze was born on May 17th, 1912, at Minyip, Victoria, the eldest child of Carl Johann Heintze and Ida Bertha nee Aumann.
On leaving school, he farmed at Minyip, purchasing a property to the west of the home farm, in 1940. He and Leslie pulled down the home on this property and built a new one in 1942. He worked this property until ill health forced him to retire to Horsham in 1969.
Victor married Myrtle Edith Pietsch at Horsham on April 10th, 1943. Myrtle was born on September
22nd, 1919; at Kewell, Victoria, the daughter of August Hermann Pietsch and Ida Victoria nee Mibus (Jorgenson).
The Church played an important part in their lives; Victor was an Elder of St John’s Lutheran Church, Minyip, and also served as a Layman, carrying on a good pastoral ministry at Horsham after retiring.
He died at Horsham on January 18th, 1984, and was buried in the Horsham Cemetery, Victoria.

Frederick Benjamin Aumann was born on August 19th, 1885 at Ashens near Murtoa, Victoria; the
Eleventh child of Heinrich Wilhelm Aumann and Johanne Eleonore nee Baum.
Fred was educated at the South Rupanyup School and on leaving school worked as a farm labourer and in 1911, went sharefarming to Jeparit with Paul Breuer, brother of Ida Breuer who was married to Fred’s brother, Henry. Fred stayed on the farm until he enlisted in the A.I.F. July 31st, 1916. He left Port Melbourne for overseas service on the ship Hororata on November 23rd, 1916. While in active service he was wounded in the foot in April 1918 and discharged on December 28th, 1918, but remained in hospital in England and later in camp at Salisbury Plains, England, returning to Australia the following year.
On his return from active service, Fred applied for a Soldiers Settlement Block and got an orchard block at Narre Warren, Victoria. It was here that he brought his bride Marguerette Gertrude nee Pettingill. Marguerette was born on January 2nd, 1895 at Drouin, Victoria; the daughter of Frederick William Pettingill and Maria Marguerette nee Hollingbery. The couple were married in the Church of England, Port Fairy, Victoria on February 17th, 1920.
While at Narre Warren, Fred took an active part in community life belonging to the local R.S.L., Narre Warren Progress Association, a Chief Scout Leader, Chief warden of the Narre Warren Bushfire Brigade and a Vestryman in the Church of England, Berwick.
When his health began to fail, Fred sold the orchard at Narre Warren in 1958 and went to live at
Wagin, Western Australia, near where his daughter Winifred and family lived. Fred and Marguerette had a family of one son and two daughters. Their son, Cyril was lost at sea when the ship he was serving on — H.M.A.S. Sydney — sank in the Indian Ocean on December 19th, 1941. Cyril would have celebrated his 21st birthday on December 31st that year.
On his last visit to Murtoa before leaving for the West, Fred proudly inspected the tall gum trees growing on the west side of the lake, recalling how he had helped plant them over 30 years ago while he was still in his teens.
Fred died at Wagin, Western Australia on April 10th, 1962 and was buried in the Wagin Cemetery. Marguerette then moved to a Church Retirement Village in Mt Lawley, Perth where she died on May 27th, 1984. After Cremation in Perth her ashes were interred in Fred’s grave in the Wagin Cemetery, Western Australia.

CYRIL AUMANN
Cyril Aumann was bom on December 31st, 1920, at Berwick, Victoria; the eldest child of Frederick Benjamin Aumann and Marguerette Gertrude nee Pettingill.
Cyril worked at home on the orchard after leaving school, although he had his heart set on going to sea. His parents allowed him to sit for a scholarship to enter Flinders Naval College, but he failed the exam. So he continued working on the orchard, not liking the work, still with his heart set on the sea. His father realising this allowed him to join the Navy. A new world opened up for him and he would tell his parents of his experiences and his visits to foreign ports.
Then came 1939 and outbreak of World War 11 and the Australian ship he was sewing on sank an Italian ship — The Bartolomeo Gollioni — in 1940. While Cyril was sewing on the H.M.A.S. Sydney, Cyril was lost at sea when the Sydney was sunk by a German Raider in the Indian Ocean on November 20th, 1940.
Cyril was a Leading Stoker on this ship, dying at the age of nearly 21 years of age, only a month before he would have celebrated his 21st birthday.

Rheinhold Otto Aumann was born at Ashens near Murtoa, Victoria, on September 30th, 1886; the twelfth child of Heinrich Wilhelm Aumann and Johanne Eleonore ne Baum. Following his schooling at the Hopefield School, he saved sufficient moneys to join his brother, Paul at The Rock, New South Wales, where he purchased land.
It was here that he had a farming and grazing property for the rest of his working life. When he retired in his late sixties he leased the property to his nephew, Alf Jaeger, but remained in the home for a time until he purchased a home in Wagga Wagga. His interest in farming took him to the Royal Melbourne Show yearly.
When his mother was alive Rheinhold Otto (Barney) made regular visits to see her at Murtoa,
sometimes staying with the Dehnert family at Bridgewater on his way through to Murtoa. Barney, a name given to him by his family and friends had a jovial nature which endeared him greatly to his nieces and nephews.
He had an interest in sport, playing cricket in his younger days, and bowls, the later belonging to The Rock Bowling Club. On his retirement he became a member of the Wagga Wagga City Bowling Club of which he was a Life Member.
In 1917 Barney enlisted and served in the A.I.F., during which he leased the farm until his return.
He remained single and on July 11th, 1968, Barney died at Wagga Wagga, New South Wales and was buried in the Wagga Wagga Cemetery.

Dora Mathilda Aumann was born on September 20th, 1888 at Ashens near Murtoa, Victoria; the daughter of Heinrich Wilhelm Aumann and Johanne Eleonore nee Baum.
Dora Mathilda (Tilly) was educated at the Hopefield School which was not far from her home. On leaving school Tilly helped on the farm, being very good at chores which needed doing around the farm and home. Nothing was of any effort for her including the heavy work.
In 1921, she married at the her home to Cecil Henry Turgoose who was born on May 28th, 1887, in Lincolnshire, England. Cecil was the eldest of four children, the only one to come to Australia. He came before the 1914-18 War and enlisted in Sydney on October 22nd, 1914, serving in the Army until his discharge in May 1919, having been awarded the Military Medal.
Cecil then worked with the Rivers and Water Commission doing channelling in the Riverina of New South Wales and Victoria. He also worked for the Heintze family at Minyip before he met Tilly.
Their first child, Kathleen, was born at Box Hill, Victoria, in 1923 and soon after Cecil was offered a Soldiers Settlement Block, two miles south of Salisbury, Victoria. This land was uncleared scrub country and poor soil. It took a lot of hard work with only horses and primitive machinery to clear the property. Cecil had a team of ten horses and one light horse for the gig. The family kept cows, pigs and fowls, selling eggs and butter which helped pay for groceries.
Cecil and Tilly had a family of four sons and three daughters all who on leaving school assisted with the work on the farms, as Cecil could not afford to employ a man during these depression years. The farm produced wheat and was also used for grazing.
Having been raised in a strict Lutheran home, Tilly retained her Faith and worshipped regularly at Nhill. Her family attended the Methodist Sunday School at Kiata not far from Salisbury. Tilly was an excellent cook and made clothes for the children as well as assisting her husband on the farm. Times
were hard and Tilly did not have good health and on March 28th, 1941, Tilly died and was buried in the Murtoa Cemetery, Victoria. She was only 52 years of age, leaving a young family which were cared for by their eldest sister, Kathleen who took on the responsibility of her mother.
After two droughts, in 1944, Cecil sold the farm and moved into Nhill with his family, the older children leaving home to work. The younger ones were cared for by Kathleen.
Cecil’s health was failing, but he worked at the Air Force School at Nhill as a mess orderly until the end of the War. His health failed further and he was in hospital for two years before he died on August 27th, 1947, and was buried in the Murtoa Cemetery, Victoria.

It was hard work, but she struggled through the years that followed helping her father cart wheat and stook hay, as the other children were still at school. It was on her 21st birthday, the family moved to Nhill when the farm was sold.
Still caring for the family, Kathleen did housework in Nhill for 2/- an hour. After the older children left school they moved away to work only leaving the younger ones to care for. Then for two years she went to Mildura picking grapes, the second year she cooked for 14 pickers at Cardross. She then worked as a cook at the Central Cafe, Nhill, her wages then increased to 13 pounds a week, of which half went to help pay off the house her father had bought.
On February 9th, 1952, at Nhill, Kathleen married Norman Jackson who was born on December 31st, 1922, at Coburg, Victoria; the son of Norman Drysdale Jackson and Maud Harriet nee Mark. Norman served in the 1939-45 War as an Engineer in the A.I.F. He was a carpenter by trade, building

DOROTHY JEAN 1927- JOSEPH HILLIER FLETCHER 1922-
Bertha Christine Aumann was born at Ashens, near Murtoa, Victoria, on August 13th, 1890; fourteenth of a family of fifteen children of Heinrich Wilhelm Aumann and Johanne Eleonore nee Baum. Being one of such a large family ensured that Bertha was always advised and helped by her older siblings. Her oldest brother, Henry, was 17 years of age when Bertha was born, and his eldest child was born before she left school. She was educated at the Rupanyup South State School. Her father died soon after she left school and she continued to live at home with her mother and sister. She assisted with the management of home and farm, where they milked cows, sold butter and farm produce. Bertha also helped her mother and sister in raising two orphaned nieces.
She enjoyed hobbies such as crochet work, painting and drawing.
Bertha lived on one side of the railway line and Olver Arnell Hamilton lived on the other side. After

four years of courtship, they married on June 3rd, 1925. Presbyterian Minister, the Rev. J. Schussler officiated at the ceremony which was held in the front room of the Aumann home. Olver was the son
of Allan Alexander Hamilton and Harriet Ann nee Olver, and was born on April 20th, 1896 at Coromby, near Murtoa. The couple made their home at “Fairleigh”, now owned by her daughter, about two miles from the Aumann old property which is worked today by Bertha’s grandson.
Bertha and Olver (Ollie) lived on this property all their married life. Ollie was interested in the historical value of old machinery and restored and donated items to the Warracknabeal Wheatlands Museum. In his younger days, Ollie was interested in photography and excelled at mechanical work, repairing his farm machinery and motor vehicles.
Ollie had farmed at Hopefield all his life. Hopefield (now Ashens) Siding was named after the Aumann property when the rail line was built. The name was changed to Ashens because of confusion with mail and goods with Hopefield, New South Wales.
Farming was then done with a nine horse team and wheat was carted by wagon to the siding and lumped up wheat stacks by wheat lumpers. Hay and chaff were cut to feed the horse team. In the 1940s, bulldog tractors replaced horses and an old

rebuilt Chevrolet truck carted 28 bags of wheat instead of the wagon and horses. Auto headers replaced harvesters and horse teams. By 1950, the horse era had passed and farming was mechanical.
In 1949, Ollie owned “Fairleigh” and continued to run the property until he was 80 years of age. In 1951, his son in-law took over the main work of the farm.
Ollie was a member of the Murtoa Rural Fire Brigade from its beginning and served as a delegate to No. 17 Regional Council meetings. He was also a member of the local Advisory Council and was involved in the inspection and purchase of Murtoa’s first Rural Fire truck. Additionally, he was a member of the A & P Society for many years, was prominent in organising the display of vintage farm machinery at the Murtoa 75th Jubilee Show in 1959 and at the Murtoa Centenary Show in 1972.
One hobby took him to clearing sales and he was well known by auctioneers throughout the
Wimmera and Southern Mallee. In his young days, he was a member of the famous Ashens B Grade cricket team.
Ollie and Bertha were members of the Murtoa Methodist Church, where Ollie was Church Trust Secretary for 13 years. He was also a member of the quarterly meeting and was active in maintaining the church property. Ollie and Bertha had one daughter and the family were regular worshippers.
Bertha was an excellent cook and housekeeper, and was able to budget carefully enough to see
them through the depression of the 1920’s. She had a good sense of humour and enjoyed harmless, practical jokes, but her main interest was her family, home and church.
Bertha died on June 3rd, 1930 at Ashens on the anniversary of their silver wedding. The last six years of Ollie’s life was spent battling failing eyesight and he spent the final 16 months in the Murtoa Hospital. Ollie died on June 13th, 1985 at Murtoa and both were buried in the Murtoa Cemetery, Victoria.
DOROTHY JEAN HAMILTON
Dorothy Jean Hamilton was born on July 15th, 1927; the only child of Olver Arnell Hamilton and Bertha Christine nee Aumann. She was educated at the Hopefield State School. She left school at the age of 14 years to work on the farm, her jobs covering various aspects of farm work.
Dorothy married Joseph Hillier Fletcher on February 14th, 1951, at the Murtoa Methodist Church. Joseph (Joe) was born at Shepparton, Victoria on May 11th, 1922; the son of George Alexander Hamilton and Lucy nee Hillier.
Joe and Dorothy lived on “Fairleigh” in the home built by Dorothy’s parents and now run the property. Joe attended the Congupna Road State School (near Shepparton) and on leaving school at the age of 15 years, he worked at home on his father’s farm.
Joe and Dorothy had a family of a son and a daughter, who both live at home. As a family, they all take an active part in community life and are members of the Uniting Church. Joe was a member
“Fairleigh ” taken from the air.
of the Methodist Church Trust and Quarterly Meeting and Sunday School Secretary — first for the Methodist Church and then the uniting Church, for 30 years. He received a certificate for 25 years as a local preacher. He was also a member of the Murtoa A & P Society, of which Dorothy is a foundation member of the Ladies Committee. Dorothy is also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Murtoa Hospital.
As well as being a farmer, Joe is regarded as a capable general handyman. His hobby is amateur photography and he was official photographer for the Murtoa Centenary Show in 1972.

Frank was later promoted to the Control Room and then worked as Supervisor for the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board at Head Office.
Like most women of her time, Alice was an excellent cook. She was also a competent knitting machinist and her hobbies included reading and enjoying picnics.

FRANK HOWARTH (PETER) AUMANN
Frank Howarth (Peter) Aumann was born on September 12th, 1921, at South Caulfield, Victoria; the eldest child of Frank Oswald Aumann and Alice Isabel nee Gash.
Peter — as he was known among family and friends — married at South Caulfield on March 20th, 1954, to Catherine Edith nee Williams, who was born on April 2nd, 1929 at Carlton, Victoria; the daughter of Herbert Alfred Norman Williams and Elizabeth nee Leighton.
Peter was educated at Huntingtower College and began a science course at the Melbourne University. However, because of serious eye problems, his hopes of making a career in the scientific field ended and he started work at the Technical
Laboratories of the then P.M.G. Department.
Peter and Catherine had a family of one son and three daughters. Two of their children inherited Peter’s interest in things mechanical and technical. Peter’s expertise extended to carpentry and bricklaying, he being in the process of renovating his home at the time of his death. He remained with the P.M.G. Department for 28 years and died on January 7th, 1975 at Moorabbin, Victoria.
Unfortunately, Peter died before seeing his home renovation work completed, but the house was still the home of his widow and youngest daughter until Catherine died on July 11th, 1992 at Caulfield, Victoria,. Both her and Peter were interred at the Springvale Crematorium, Victoria.

IAN THOMAS AUMANN
Ian Thomas Aumann was born on July 9th, 1928, at South Caulfield, Victoria; the son of Frank Oswald Aumann and Alice Isabel nee Gash.
On October 22nd, 1977, Ian married Ruth Olive nee Dickson who was born on February 27th, 1933, at Brighton, Victoria; the daughter of Oliver Dickson and Stella Eliza nee Wain.
Ian was unfortunate to have lost his eye sight while in his teens. However he matriculated in 1946 and then spent five years at the University of Melbourne taking his Bachelor of Music degree. For a short time, Ian taught music privately, but as the demand for lessons waned, he turned to earning his living by simple joinery. He also maintained his own M.G. car, and built two 12 foot boats. He taught himself to use a screw cutting lathe, circular saw and electric welder.
Later, he joined the C.U. Staff and worked for over 20 years as a switchboard operator, using a Braille machine. His blindness never deterred him from being a capable and talented person in many ways.
After marrying at the age of 49 years, he and his wife, Ruth, lived at South Caulfield in a home which Ian had designed. He also made many items for the home which made work easier for Ruth.
Unfortunately, they were only married for six years when Ian died on December 14th, 1983. He was buried at the Brighton Cemetery, Victoria. Ruth still lives in the home at South Caulfield.

Wilhelm (William) Heinrich Aumann was the youngest child of Carl Samuel Aumann and Johanne Eleonore nee Sommer. He was born at Kohlhohe, Silesia, Prussia, on November 2nd, 1847, and was only six years of age when he came to Australia with his father and stepmother on the ship Australia, arriving in Melbourne on November 16th, 1853, fourteen days after turning six.
He must have been educated at Hawthorn as that is where the family lived until they moved to Doncaster before I860; he may then have completed his education at the school run by Pastor Max von Schramm.
William married on August 23rd, 1874, at St. Francis Church, Melbourne, to Margaret nee Walshe who was born in 1849 at Kilkenny, Ireland; the daughter of John Walshe and Bridget nee Doran. Witnesses to the wedding were Denis Ryan and Elizabeth Bourke and the ceremony was conducted by Rev. Peter O’Meara.
On his marriage certificate. William stated his occupation as a blacksmith; a trade he carried all his life at Heidelberg. His Blacksmith’s Shop was in Banksia Street, Heidelberg, west of Lower Heidelberg Road, where the Safeway Store now stands.
Carl Heinrich Uebergang, whose parents came
from the same district in Silesia, carried out his apprenticeship with William.
William applied for naturalisation in 1913, and stated having resided in Hawthorn, Doreen and Heidelberg. He did own property at Doreen and must have lived there at some time.

Billy was the most active of the Aumann boys, playing football for Richmond United Football Club back in the 1920’s, and also pursuing a Jockey’s career at the old Richmond Racecourse. After the War he went back to his love for horses and began
dealing — and blacksmithing until he became too ill to work.

William Rank was a miller and owned the flour mill in Vine Street from 1870 for about 20 years. When the mill closed it was used as a fodder store for a period, until Mr Rank moved his business up
Burgundy street, near the Railway Station. At his own expense, William constructed a number of bowling rinks on his property in Vine Street. These rinks were made available to the public on November 5th, 1907 and was to be the first

He was associated with the early plantings in the Warringal Gardens and also attended conferences of Curators throughout the State. He was interested in growing plants commercially and specialised in lemon tress. Careful in his financial affairs, he built three homes in

Ernestine Auguste Beate Aumann was born at Graben near Streigau, Silesia, Prussia, on February 12th, 1844; the daughter of Charlotte Schmidt.
Charlotte Schmidt married Carl Samuel Aumann before coming to Australia and this is possibly when Ernestine Auguste took the name of Aumann. She came to Australia with the family on the ship Australia, arriving at Melbourne on November 16th, 1853.
Nothing is known of her education but she would have lived with the family, first at Hawthorn and then Doncaster, until she married on January 9th, 1866, at the German Church, Melbourne, to Johann Rosel, who was born on January 18th, 1845, at Pilitz, Bautzen, Saxony, Germany. He was the son of Johann Rosel and Johanne Eleonore nee Pietsch.
Johann arrived in Australia with his parents and two sisters, Magdalena and Maria, on the ship Prebislav, departing Hamburg on August 23rd, 1849 and arrived in Melbourne on February 2nd, 1850. Magdalena later married Christian Bindt and Maria married Carl Ewert, both living at Wollert, Victoria.
After arriving, the Rosel family made their home at Westgarthtown (Thomastown), however Johann and Ernestine Auguste lived at Wollert after their marriage, and it was here that their family of one son and four daughters were born. Their third child, Emma Christiane, died at five months of age. Two daughters, Johanne and Christiane, were born on March 8th, 1871, but Johanne died almost immediately, while Auguste Christiane died five months later. She died at Doncaster, so it would appear that the family moved to that district in the winter of 1871. Auguste was buried in the Waldau Cemetery, Doncaster.
Sad times were to continue for Johann as Ernestine Auguste died on October 23rd, 1872, and was also buried in the Waldau Cemetery, Doncaster, leaving Johann with the two eldest children who would have only been seven and eight years of age.
Johann’s mother, Johanne Eleonore, died at Doncaster in November, 1874, and was also buried in the Waldau Cemetery, Doncaster. Johann remarried in 1876 to Julianna Francesca nee Keicher and the couple were blessed with another son and two more daughters, who were all born at Doncaster While at Wollert, Johann would have engaged in farming but at Doncaster, he took on orcharding.
About October 1888, the family and Johann’s father moved to Upper Flynn’s Creek, near Traralgon, where the Traralgon paper of the day comments on their arrival.
(Quote:) “FLYNN’S CREEK — From our correspondent — October 9th, 1888 I have always had the opinion that the land boom in Melbourne would not be without its attendant benefits
to the country districts, and I am glad to find that my opinion has proved correct. In our neighbourhood we are already experiencing some benefit therefrom, and it is very probable that in the near future, we may derive still more. Melbourne men and Melbourne money are finding their way up here slowly but surely, and I have been assured that others will follow as soon as sufficient inducement offers. Several former residents of Doncaster are now located at the Upper Flynn’s Creek, they having disposed of their properties in that place at enormous prices. Three of these, viz., Messrs Tuffiu, Rosel and Walters, are going in for fruitgrowing on a large scale, and as they are all practical men, there is no doubt but that they will make it a success.
Great improvements in the way of grubbing, clearing, etc., are being made on the holdings lately purchased by these gentlemen, who, since their arrival have shown themselves in to be both industrious and systematic in all they undertake. We hail with satisfaction the coming of such men, and wish them every success in their venture. ”
A later paper quotes:- “A day or two ago I jumped on my horse and went for a ride round the Flynn’s Creek district. The first place I pulled up at was Mr. Doncaster’s, a gentleman who had purchased a property near Upper Flynn’s Creek State School. ‘ Well, my friend, ’ I asked, ‘What do you intend going in for here — I mean, what account are you going to turn your land to ?’ ‘Dairying and grazing, I suppose?’ ‘Not I, ’ he returned. ‘But I tell you what! I intend going into the fruitgrowing on a large scale as I have had a good deal of experience in that line, and I consider the climate and soil here admirably adapted to this purpose, and so do my neighbours who have recently purchased properties here. They are also old fruit growers, and one of them planted 1,000 trees or more this year and intends planting still more next season. ’ “
Unfortunately, Johann’s wife died on December 1st, 1888 at Upper Flynn’s Creek and was buried in the Traralgon Cemetery, Victoria.
The Traralgon newspaper reports: December 4th, 1888. OBITUARY
On Sunday afternoon the body of Mrs Rosel, late of Flynn’s Creek, was conveyed to its last resting place in the Traralgon Cemetery, when the Rev J.R. Walker officiated. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Brightwell and Son of this town.
December 7th, 1888. (From our own correspondent) FLYNN’S CREEK:
“It is with a feeling of deep regret that I have to write of the death of Mrs John Rosel, a paragraph in your

last issue. The deceased lady was the wife of one of the recently arrived strangers from Doncaster. Mrs Rosel was attacked with inflammation about a fortnight ago, and died early Saturday morning. The greatest sympathy is felt for Mr Rosel, who has proved himself to be a genial neighbour since he first settled in this part. ”
The family later moved to Tyers, north of Traralgon, about 1896-97 and it was here that Johann’s father died on November 25th, 1897, at the age of 94 years.
The land was still in the name of John Rosel in 1910 when the State Electricity Commission bought it for the Open Cut Mine. This John Rosel would have been Johann and Ernestine Auguste’s son.
Some of the family then moved to New Zealand and Western Australia.
Johann Rosel remarried again after his second wife died to Annie Willis who was born in 1859 at
Auckland, New Zealand, the daughter of John Willis and Pheobe nee Kemp. The wedding took place at Collingwood, Victoria on September 4th, 1889- John and Annie lived for sometime in Collingwood where their five children where born. John had a family of one son and four daughters from his first marriage, two sons and two daughters from his second marriage and two sons and three daughters from his third marriage. A total 14 children. Some of his children from the first two marriages moved to New Zealand and Western Australia. The children from his third marriage did not marry, his two sons dying as young children and the three daughters lived at Collingwood until the last died in 1976.
Johann’s wife Annie died on June 19th, 1928 at Prahran, Victoria and is buried in the Melbourne General Cemetery, Victoria. At this stage the death of Johann has not been established, as the records in Victoria do not record his death. He may have died in Western Australia or New Zealand.

Wilhelmine Caroline Rosel was born at Wollert, Victoria, on September 13th, 1866; the eldest child of Johann Rosel and Ernestine Auguste Beate nee Aumann.
Wilhelmine (Minnie) was only six years old when her mother died, which was soon after the family moved to Doncaster to live. Minnie was probably educated at Pastor Schramm’s school in Doncaster. It is not known whether she went with her family to Upper Flynn’s Creek when they moved there in 1888, but this is likely, as when Carl Samuel Aumann died, he named Minnie in his Will as living at Upper Flynn’s Creek.
Minnie was living at Outtrim, Gippsland, when she married on July 1st, 1897, at Korumburra to Thomas Ferrier. Thomas was born in 1868 at Arbwath, Scotland; the son of James Ferrier and Mary nee Boyle. Witnesses to the wedding were

Thomas was a miner and was working in the Howitt mine, Outtrim, when a piece of stone fell and injured him in the back.
WILHELMINE CAROLINE ROSEL
The Southern Advocate wrote on June 10th, 1897:
A miner named Thomas Ferrier was injured whilst at work in the Howitt on Thursday afternoon, a piece of stone falling and slightly injuring his hack. He is under the care of Dr Morton, who reports him as progressing favourably.
The Howitt mine is on the improve and looks beautiful, in fact exceeds all expectations in such an out of the way place. This is mainly due to the endless haulage tapping it as it does. The system is working admirably, and reflects great credit on the mining management. ”
In fact, Thomas failed to improve as was expected, and he died on August 5th, 1897, — only a month after his marriage — from Tubercular Pleurisy caused by this accident. He was buried in the Korumburra Cemetery, Victoria.
At this time, Outtrim was a thriving community with a school, church, railway station, various community buildings and a large number of homes. On visiting the area in 1988, the only trace of existence of this community was the old school house. Very little remained of the old Howitt mine.
Minnie continued to live at Outtrim and on March 1st, 1899, she married Joseph Gardner at St Paul’s Church of England, Korumburra. Joseph was born in 1866 at Banbury, Oxfordshire, England; the son of Joseph Gardner and Susannah nee Potts. Joseph was a grocer at that time. Witnesses to the marriage were Catherine Kilmartin and Minnie’s brother, Johann Frederick Michael Rosel. The celebrant was the Rev. W.D.V. Reid
Joseph died on July 31st, 1939, at Kew, Victoria, and Minnie died on May 8th, I960, at Brighton, Victoria. Both are buried in the Kew Cemetery, Victoria. They had no family.

Johann Frederick Michael Rosel was born on August 17th, 1868, at Woodstock, Victoria; the second child of Johann Rosel and Ernestine Auguste Beate nee Aumann.
Johann Frederick Michael was baptised by Pastor Hermann Herlitz of the German Church, East Melbourne, on September 2nd, 1868. Sponsors were Michael Zimmer, Frederick Ewert and Maria Ewert.
He would have been educated firstly at Pastor Schramm’s Doncaster school, and then when the family moved to Upper Flynn’s Creek, would have completed his education there.
On October 11th, 1899, Johann (John) married Mary Ann (Polly) Dodd, who was born in 1874 at Durham, England; the daughter of William Dodd and Mary Maria nee Lee. They were married at the Presbyterian Manse, Korumburra, Victoria, by Rev. R.C. Farley, Wesleyan Minister. Witnesses to the marriage were William Dodd and Minnie Gardner, a sister to John.
John and Polly went to Western Australia about 1907, where John took up 160 acres of virgin bush near Collie. John and his sons worked hard to clear the land by hand. They then planted an orchard, following the tradition of John’s father and the Aumann families, and the property was named “Woodbine”. They also kept a few cows and the boys delivered milk on their way to school, which was quite a distance from the farm.
“Woodbine” became insufficient to keep the family as they grew older, so John took up a position in the Collie coal mines, working as the first underground manager, until his retirement.
The farm was then sold when John and Polly retired into Mandurah, a seaside resort, south of Perth. John died there in 1944, at the age of 76 years, and his wife, Polly, died a few years later in 1950, also at the age of 76 years. Both are buried in the Collie Cemetery, Western Australia.
