A Brief History of the Lutheran Cemetery at Waldau

The first burial at Waldau took place in December 1854 when August Lenkerstorff, one year old son of August and Catherine Lenkerstorff was laid to rest on land owned by Friedrich Straube.

Early records of Trinity Lutheran Congregation state that after members had previously met together for worship in private homes, a meeting was held on April 30th 1858 to discuss the erection of a chapel. The following members attended Gottlieb Thiele (elected Chairman), Gottfried Thiele, Carl Aumann senior, Carl Aumann junior, Andreas Zander, Wilhelm Zander, Friedrich Straube, Ernst Straube, Gottfried Walther, Friedrich Walther, Friedrich Tucheband, Carl Hanke, Christian Finger, Gottlieb Simon, August Lenkerstorff, Ernst Wittig, Heinrich Fromhold, and Valentin Gunther.

The meeting resolved to proceed with the building of a church, and elected a building committee. Three sites were offered to the congregation. A meeting was held four days later, after each of the sites had been inspected, and the congregation decided unanimously to accept Mr. Straube’s offer of one acre, as the majority of members were in favour of building the church near the cemetery. The meeting asked Mr. Straube to speed up the release of the site, in order that a beginning might be made with the erection of the church. Approval was given by the meeting for the erection of j a building 40 feet long, 20 feet wide and 10 feet high, the construction of the walls to be of poles with lath and plaster and the roof to be covered with palings.

At a meeting held on 23 June 1858, it was resolved that one third of a chain on the southern boundary of the block be cutoff, and one third of a chain be added to the eastern boundary in order that the church might stand more in the middle of the block.

The church was dedicated, amid great rejoicing, on 26 December 1858 by Pastor Mathias Goethe. At a meeting of the congregation held towards the close of 1859 the following resolutions were adopted.

  1. That only those persons who receive Holy Communion in the church, be regarded as members of the congregation.
  2. That members of the congregation pay fifteen shillings for the grave of an adult and twelve shillings for the grave of a child under ten years of age.
  3. That the charge for a reserved grave be two pounds.
  4. That in the case of people who are not members of the congregation, the charge for the grave of an adult be one pound and of a child under the age of ten years fifteen shillings.
  5. That the charge for a reserved family section be in keeping with the number of graves.
  6. That for the digging of a grave and for the setting of a border around the grave, the grave digger be paid ten shillings in the case of adults and eight shillings in the case of children.
  7. That plans for the outlay of a cemetery be prepared.
  8. That children and adults be buried in separate sections.
  9. That a man be appointed as sexton (verger) and grave digger and that he be permitted to erect a home for himself on a part of the cemetery allocated to him.
  10. That before the commencement of the main church services at nine and ten o'clock, the church bell be rung for ten minutes, and that this be done also before the commencement of all official acts of the con-gregation.
  11. That after the death of a member of the congregation, the bell be rung for fifteen minutes at ten a.m. and also for fifteen minutes prior to the arrival of the casket at the grave.
  12. That every day the bell be rung three times: at the rising and setting of the sun and at twelve noon.
  13. That in addition to a quarterly collection the sexton receive an annual salary of four pounds.

Waldau Church and cemetery from Friedensruh, c1860-70.  The cemetery and original wattle and daub Lutheran Church in Bismark (later Victoria) Street, Doncaster. The church grounds are enclosed with a post and three rail fence on the west and by a picket or palling fence on the other three sides. Straube's house can be seen at the rear and large trees remain in the distance. The site of the church is now occupied by Schramm's Cottage and Museum.  DP0452

In 1872 trees and shrubs from the Botanical Gardens were planted in the cemetery.

Altogether one hundred and twenty five people were buried in the Waldau cemetery - eighty children and forty five adults.

The cemetery was closed in October 1888 because of increasing seepage from graves into nearby Ruffey Creek, water from which was still being used for domestic purposes at the time. The last adult to be buried there was Elizabeth Zander who died on 23 April 1888, and the last child was Ludwig Thomsen who died on 24 June 1888.

For many years after its closure, the cemetery was lovingly cared for by John Finger, but during World War 11 all of the tombstones were destroyed through acts of vandalism. In 1974 the site was handed over to the City of Doncaster and Templestowe and has since been under the care of the Doncaster-Templestowe Historical Society.

Karoline and Louise Hanke headstone

Here Rest in God Two Sisters
The small inheritors of heavan died still innocent
Therefore one does not grieve for them

Addendum from 1991 03 DTHS Newsletter "Hanke Sisters:
The inscription on the headstone of the Hanke grave is written in German.  Several people with a knowledge of german have attempted to make a translation of the inscription. One German visitor recognised the lines as a quotation from a song she used to sing in kindergarten.  She was able to give the meaning but the translation did not read well. It could not be literally translated.  Del Haack sent a copy of the inscription to Dr. Maurice Schild at  the Lutheran Seminary in South Australia. He has kindly sent us a correct translation.

Here rest in God two sisters
Karolina Bertha Hanke
Louise Ida Hanke
Softly rest their ashes
When little heirs of heaven
Die in their innocency
Then one loses them not
