On August 22nd, 1872, the overland telegraph between Darwin and Adelaide was completed. One slender iron wire connected Melbourne with the undersea cable from Darwin to London.

The telegraph link had considerable effect on the development of Australia. It provided the ready communication necessary for financial dealings, thus helping the twenty years of development and prosperity that followed.

Prior to this, The Adelaide to Melbourne connection was begun in April 1857 and had been completed in July 1858.
